A United Nations official claimed that a donation of just 2 percent of Elon Musk’s wealth would help solve world hunger and save 42 million lives. Musk, worth over $300 billion, says he will liquidate stock immediately if the World Food Programme can provide proof.
The initial remarks aired on CNN’s Connect the World with Becky Anderson. Becky Anderson, director of UN food scarcity organization, told CNN that a donation of just $6 billion, 2% of Musk’s wealth, would help solve world hunger.
“Billionaires need to step up now, on a one-time basis,” Beasley said in the interview. “$6 billion to help 42 million people that are literally going to die if we don’t reach them. It’s not complicated.”
Musk took notice of the interview and took to Twitter to respond to the request, asking for the WFP would spend the money. Musk asked the WFP to respond to his tweet detailing exactly how the money would get used for all to see.

“If WFP can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6 billion will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it,” he tweeted, “but it must be open-source accounting, so the public sees precisely how the money is spent.”
Beasley appeared to back down from his initial claims after Musk responded, “$6 billion will not solve world hunger.” Continuing, “but it WILL prevent geopolitical instability, mass migration and save 42 million people on the brink of starvation. An unprecedented crisis and a perfect storm due to Covid/conflict/climate crises.”
Beasley did not respond to Musk’s request for an outline of how the organization would spend the money. He did assure the billionaire in a tweet that the WFP had the systems in place for transparency and open source accounting. “Your team can review and work with us to be totally confident of such,” he said.
Musk’s wealth has skyrocketed in the last year, surpassing Jeff Bezos’ $200 billion fortune just over a month ago. Last week Tesla announced that Hertz had ordered 100,000 of its vehicles. The news shot the company’s share price up, pushing Tesla over $1 trillion market cap and helping push Musk’s fortune over $300 billion.
