Ethan Hawke Calls 'Moon Knight' a 'Limited Series'

It’s looking like Moon Knight will be a one-and-done series, similar to WandaVision. Ethan Hawke, who plays Arthur Harrow in Moon Knight, recently described the show as a limited series, meaning there likely won’t be a second season. On the bright side, Moon Knight will likely continue to appear in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.

Ethan Hawke plays Arthur Harrow in ‘Moon Knight’

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Ethan Hawke explained why he agreed to sign on to play the villain in Moon Knight.

“I’ve kind of just followed my gut my whole life,” the actor shared. “One of the biggest jobs an actor has is once you’re in a position to have jobs offered to you, [you have] to figure out which ones to do and which ones not to do. It’s often a trial and error, and sometimes you make the wrong decision. But in general, when an actor who’s really talented has a fire in their heart to play a character, it doesn’t go that badly. It turns out pretty interesting.”

Hawke added, “I had a feeling that if Oscar [Isaac] was this convincing to me [about Moon Knight], he might be that convincing to the world as this character. He really wanted to play this part, and his reasons were sound, and he was dedicated, and I just felt right about it immediately.”

“Plus, I’d already been in talks with [director and executive producer] Mohamed [Diab],” he concluded. “I’d been working on another project with Mohamed that he had to drop out of to do this, and so it seemed like such synchronicity that both these guys would come at me with a Marvel job. I felt like, well, if I was ever going to jump into this playground, the time is obviously now.”

Fans love Ethan Hawke’s performance as Arthur Harrow, a cult leader who has a connection to the Egyptian goddess Ammit, in Moon Knight. So it’s a good thing that Hawke agreed to join the series.

‘Moon Knight’ is a one and done series, according to Ethan Hawke

Unfortunately, Ethan Hawke’s time as Arthur Harrow may soon come to an end. During the interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor shared what surprised him most about Moon Knight. And he revealed that the Marvel Disney+ show is a limited series in his answer.

“Well, the limited series in and of itself is a relatively new form, as far as our industry is concerned,” Hawke started. “It’s evolving and changing so rapidly. I mean, I’ve been working for 30 years, and in the last three years, I did two limited series after never having done one at all. And they both had bigger budgets than any of the movies that I’ve done. The medium is changing.”

He added, “One of the surprises to me was the process. We developed all the episodes, and we had Mohamed and this team of [directors] Justin [Benson] and Aaron [Moorhead], and everybody was around at all the rehearsals. It was kind of wonderful. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, the director’s in charge now.’ It felt like one thing, one breathing entity, and I’d never seen that happen before. Now granted, it’s only my second limited series, but I’d never seen that happen.”

Ethan Hawke seemed very confident that Moon Knight was only supposed to be a limited series. But nothing is official in the MCU until Marvel Studios confirms it.

Oscar Isaac will likely continue playing Moon Knight in the MCU after the series ends

Although Ethan Hawke called Moon Knight a limited series, that doesn’t mean that the show’s characters can’t appear in future MCU projects. Particularly, Oscar Isaac probably has a bright future in the MCU.

“I can tell you for a fact, I can see [Moon Knight] in the next 10 years, not just the next film,” Mohamed Diab told SFX Magazine. “He’s a very interesting character. He’s probably the most interesting character for any actor to play. Oscar is doing a great job. People already like him, even from the trailer. I think the show’s going to resonate with people, so I see him staying for a long time.”

Only time will tell if Oscar Isaac or Ethan Hawke will continue playing their Moon Knight characters after the show ends. Thankfully, fans still have a few more episodes to enjoy their performances.

Moon Knight airs Wednesdays on Disney+.
