Everton vs Manchester City betting preview: odds and predictions | The Sun

WILL Manchester City have other matters on their mind when they head to an Everton side scrapping for their Premier League lives on Sunday?

Everton vs Manchester City betting preview

Maybe there’s never a good time to be playing Manchester City but if there is, then this looks to be it.

Pep Guardiola’s men drew 1-1 away to Real Madrid on Tuesday and, given their long-standing record of messing things up in the Champions League, they will have Wednesday’s second leg very much on their minds.

Remember, City can afford to lose a Premier League game and still maintain control of the title race so expect plenty of changes to his XI from Guardiola at Goodison.

Of course, the replacements are still more than capable of beating an Everton side very much embroiled in the relegation battle but if they opt to rest the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne, it will certainly make things easier for the hosts, who, it should be remembered, have already held City to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad.

They also made things very tough for the champions around this time last season when they arguably should have had another draw but Rodri’s handball in the box wasn’t punished by VAR, a decision for which Everton later received an apology for.

With the Toffees arriving at this game off the back of two of their best displays of the season – they should have won at Leciester and then spanked Brighton 5-1 – expect the hosts to make things tough in front of what is usually a vociferous crowd when the big boys come calling.

They’ve beaten Arsenal here, as well as holding Liverpool and Spurs, and given the circumstances, Everton look a tempting price in the double-chance market – that’s essentially backing City not to win.

Everton vs Manchester City key stats

  • Everton scored five goals at Brighton on Monday – the only time this season they’ve managed 4+ in a game and just the second time they’ve hit 3+.
  • Manchester City have won their last 10 Premier League games and claimed victory in 15 of 17 in all competitions.
  • Julian Alvarez has scored seven goals in his 10 Premier League starts to date.
  • City have beaten 17 of the 19 other PL teams so far this season – Everton and Brentford (where they head on the final day) are the two they haven’t.
  • Only West Ham have picked up fewer cards than Man City, while just three teams have more cards than Everton.

Everton vs Manchester City best bets

Idrissa Gueye 1+ shot

Gueye isn’t a great shooter but that hasn’t stopped him from trying of late – he’s landed this bet in six of his last seven.

Clearly, shots are less likely against City but the price still looks tempting – it’s not hard to imagine Everton having to try their luck from distance if they struggle to get near the goal too often, while Gueye can often be found lurking on the edge of the box from any corners.

Idrissa Gueye to be carded

It’s back to that man Gueye, who looks to be a walking yellow card at the moment – he’s been booked in three of his last five games and he’s sure to be busy in this contest.

Everton’s midfield has long been a weak area and City will look to march through it with their passing and movement. It’s easy to envisage Gueye making a late tackle or pulling an opponent back – we’ve seen it all before with the Senegalese.

Anthony Taylor is a decent-enough referee, carding well above the league average, so 3/1 looks more than fair.

Everton/Draw double chance

Risky, no doubt, given City have won their last 10 Premier League games but this looks a good time for Everton to be facing them.

This match is sandwiched between Champions League semi-final meetings with Real Madrid and Wednesday’s second leg will be very much top priority for Pep Guardiola, whose selection will doubtless be influenced by that pending encounter.

Everton, who gained a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture, come in off the back of two of their best performances of the season, drawing 2-2 at Leicester and thrashing Brighton 5-1.

Scrapping for survival, the Goodison crowd can help their men nick something here.
