“Dear Evan Hansen” is getting closer to the big screen.
The Broadway musical sensation just dropped a trailer for the forthcoming Universal film adaptation, directed by Stephen Chbosky (“The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “Wonder”).
Ben Platt reprises his role as the titular character, a high-school loner who has trouble making friends. The movie also stars Amy Adams, Oscar winner Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever and Amandla Stenberg.
The tear-jerking trailer shows Platt’s character writing letters to himself as a form of therapy recommended by his psychiatrist.
A fellow high-schooler, Connor, ends up taking one of the letters, which his parents believe to be his final words before committing suicide.
As his peers pay tribute to Connor, Evan finds himself the center of attention after singing a breathtaking rendition of “You Will Be Found.” And because it’s 2021, he instantly becomes a social media sensation and finds himself with more friends and fame than he’d ever dreamed possible.
The film — which will feature fan-favorite songs like “Waving Through a Window,” “For Forever” and “Words Fail” from the stage musical by Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — could be Tony, Grammy and Emmy winner Platt’s first shot at an EGOT.
The trailer was released on the heels of Broadway reopening, with many shows setting September opening dates, although “Hansen” won’t return until December.
