She’s not one to shy away from weird meals, but even for Kate Quilton, kangaroo soup was a hard one to swallow.
The presenter, 39, was explores how tinned food can still be fresh and safe to eat years after being canned on tonight’s episode of Food Unwrapped.
In the episode, airing tonight at 8pm on Channel 4, the food adventurer meets with microbiologist Dr Patrick Hickey, at his mother’s house in Edinburgh, where they inspect different decades-old cans of food.
The group try their luck with different cans, taking a look at how the food has been conserved through the years, until they come across a tin of kangaroo soup the family brought back from a trip to Australia in the 1970s.
After testing the batch to see if it was safe to eat, Kate tried the soup for herself, but she was left retching after trying the meal. Meanwhile, Dr Hickey and his mother seemed to love it.
Kate gave Dr Hickey a look of stunned panic when he revealed to her the soup was indeed safe to eat, before they tried in on the show.
While sceptical, Kate decided to go ahead and try the meal, but could not hide her spontaneous reaction after ingesting a spoonful of the mixture.
The presenter could be seen turning around before gagging and retching after putting the spoon to her lips.
Looking paler than usual, Kate looked back at Dr Hickey and his mother, who were also digging in.
‘Bottom’s up guys,’ she said in a grunt.
While the presenter struggled to eat the soup, the microbiologist and his mother, Frances, looked perfectly content as they ate the meal.
A dumbfounded Kate quipped: ‘Well there you have it, 50 years in the can and perfectly edible, even enjoyable for Frances.
Unphased, Frances confirmed she was a kangaroo soup aficionado, telling Kate: ‘I might have another little tad, mmm.’

The post which got over 30,000 views read: ‘Eating in the Red Lion (Wetherspoons) in Gatwick (N) is never a ‘great’ experience.
‘However, tonight’s offering is particularly grim. The person who ‘cooked’ this abomination would fail GCSE level home economics cookery. Utterly disastrous.’
The Spoons customer ordered the Empire State burger which includes two 6oz beef patties, American-style cheese, and maple-cured bacon
The meal which is served with chips and six onion rings costs £8.05 with a drink and £9.35 with an alcoholic drink.
He also elaborated in the Tweet replies saying: ‘The chips are squishy and the burgers are crunchy – quite a feat. Almost defies the laws of physics.’
