The lightning-fast left winger played 600 games for Los Blancos between 1953 and 1971, winning a record 12 Spanish titles and one Intercontinental Cup. He was capped 43 times for his country and played in the 1962 and 1966 World Cups.
Gento started his career at Racing Santander before joining Real Madrid, aged 19.
After retiring, he became the club’s honorary president until his death.
He is survived by his wife Mari Luz and his sons Francisco and Julio.
