Four new hairstyles for women over 40 that are ‘flattering’

1. Waterfall bangs

Bangs or curtain fringes are really popular and it looks like they’re not going anywhere soon.

Anne Hathaway is a huge fan of a fringe and earlier this year, debuted a more modern take on the classic.

Woman & Home dubbed them ‘waterfall’ bangs to represent the way the wispy fringe frames her face and cascades down the sides.

To achieve ‘waterfall’ bangs, you need to have longer pieces of hair at the front of the face that “reduce in length the further inward they get”.

The ‘waterfall’ bangs are supposed to look windswept, and offer an “edgier look” so hairstylists recommend keeping them “shaggy” to achieve a “textured finish”.

2. ‘Mob’ cut

The classic bob and the longer version ‘lob’ have been around for decades, but recently, the ‘mob’ – which refers to a medium bob – has arrived on the hairstyle scene.

It’s a “sleek and stylish choice for many occasions,” professional hair stylist Lauren Udoh said, and because it’s a versatile cut, it can look “great on almost any face shape and hair type”.

Cate Blanchett is a fan of the ‘mob’ and it sees the hair ending the in the middle of the neck.

Lauren said: “The mob cut can be adjusted to complement your features and create an attractive silhouette.”

As for why it’s a great cut for women over 40, it overs “volume at the crown, with textured layers that frame the face nicely while still maintaining an easy-to-manage style,” the expert told She Finds.

3. Modern, revamped shag

A shag hairstyle is a 70s cut that never really went out of style – it is now seen on TikTok millions of times and more modern versions have wavier strands, and curtain bangs.

Hairstylist Gina Rivera, says the shag is an “amazing cut that is well-recognized for being versatile” for women over 40.

A layered, wavy shad is great for short or long hair and a bang – especially a “voluminous, curtain, centre-parted fringe can add a fresh surprise to this look,” Gina added.

4. ‘Rose’ bun

Bella Hadid recently wore her hair in a ‘rose’ bun and it basically resembles the flower with the hair pinned up at the back of the head in a coiled look.

Hair stylist Lacy Redway told Allure how it’s a revamped version of a slicked-back ballerina bun.

She said: “Just like flowers, each bun should take its own personalized form,” she explained.

“The rose bun style could potentially help hide hair loss or thinning hair as the coils can create volume and texture around the bun.”

For anyone with grey hairs poking out at the top of the head, it’s a great hairstyle to conceal them, or if on holiday, in the hot British summer weather, or experiencing menopausal flushes, having your hair neatly styled off your face and shoulders can do wonders.
