Girl, 7, dies after medics sent her home from hospital with a sprained knee

A YOUNG girl has died after medics sent her home from hospital with a sprained knee.

Little Lorrane Victória de Pontes had fallen over at school and hurt her knee last Friday, October 28.

The seven-year-old's mum was called to collect her from the school she attended in Capão Bonito in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Mum and daughter were said to have visited their local hospital where doctors X-rayed Lorrane's knee.

Her uncle Rubens Silvério da Silva Junior said that the little girl had been in pain. was vomiting and had a fever.

Despite this, medics sent her away with medication, but it was while she was at home that her leg started to swell and her pain continued.

As her pain continued, her mum took her back to the Capão Bonito hospital the next day.

Staff then put a splint in her leg and sent her home again.

Sadly, her condition worsened and she had to be taken back to hospital a third time, where she was finally seen by a paediatrician.

Her family said that her mouth had turned purple and that she needed oxygen to breathe.

More X-rays were carried out and it was found that Lorrane's liver was enlarged.

An enlarged liver is usually caused by liver disorders related to excessive alcohol use, liver cancer, fat in the liver and congestive heart failure.

Lorrane was transferred to a hospital in the city of Sorocaba, but sadly died on route on October 31.

Her uncle said: "She was neglected because there were no paediatricians."

He said that it was only on the third visit to hospital that they gave his niece the time she needed

"The whole city is mourning, the lack of doctors is frustrating. This is not the first time we have complained about a lack of doctors and the mayor needs to do something."

A cause of death has not yet been established and in an official statement from the City Hall of Capão Bonito, a spokesperson said the government was supporting the child's family.

They added: "We are awaiting the results of an expert report which is being prepared to determine the cause of death of the child so that we can take the necessary measures required."

Residents in the area have organised a protest for this Saturday, calling for improvements in health care, Journal Caucaia reported.
