Your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite has returned. HBO Max has finally debuted the first footage from its “Gossip Girl” revival.
Gone are the tights and headbands of yesteryear, the class of 2021 has a whole new vibe. Developed by showrunner Joshua Safran (who previously worked as an executive producer and writer on the original series) the new iteration of this teen staple returns the audience to an updated Upper East Side of New York.
While plot details are scarce, we do know that the new version of “Gossip Girl” will take place “nine years after the original blogger’s website went dark.” The series also promises to explore how social media “and the landscape of New York itself” has changed in almost a decade. As for who awakened Gossip Girl and why, that remains to be seen, but fingers crossed for more voice-over dramatics. And yes, that is the voice of original narrator Kristen Bell who is yet again lending her pipes to speak for the iconic blog.
The new series stars Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak and Savannah Lee Smith.
The new episodes will continue to pull inspiration from both the novels by Cecily von Ziegesar and The CW series developed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. But no matter what happens in the modernized season, it’s important to remember that this new series will have to figure out how to top the graduation episode when classic “GG” character Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) decided to forgo the mortarboard cap and instead tie her tassel directly to her head. Your move, Gevinson!
The series will premiere on Thursday, July 8th. XOXO.
