An unclear definition of what exactly constitutes an essential worker has seen industries as diverse as real estate and telecommunications demand priority access to vaccines.

Sydney’s lockdown and growing concern around the virus’ spread to other states has led to widespread confusion about which workers are necessary and which workers aren’t.

During last year’s outbreak in Victoria, the state government defined who were essential workers and what were essential businesses, but as yet New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian won’t be drawn on what is and isn’t essential.
