How backed up are YOU? Gut health expert reveals test to determine if you are fully emptying your BOWELS every day – while detailing the MANY little-known issues caused by constipation, from fatigue to hormone imbalance

  • Roslyn Kent is a holistic nutritionist and gut health expert from Canada
  • In a viral TikTok, she shared how to tell if you’re fully emptying your bowels daily
  • Constipation can cause bloating, food sensitivities, and other chronic symptoms

A Canadian gut health expert has lifted the lid on how to tell if you’re fully emptying your bowels, saying you can still be constipated even if you’re going to the bathroom multiple times a day.

Roslyn Kent, a registered holistic nutritionist based in Vancouver, is known as @plantsfirstnutrition on TikTok, where she has nearly 50,000 followers. She has gone viral after sharing her top tips for figuring out if you’re backed up or not.

‘I do need to point out the fact that yes, you should be eliminating all of the stool that is in your colon that has been formed from the day prior every single day,’ she explained at the start of the video.

‘So this means all of the waste, all of the toxins, all of the bulk in the form of fiber, all of that stuff that makes up your stool, you want to be eliminating that in full every single morning.’

Roslyn Kent, a registered holistic nutritionist and gut health expert, has gone viral on TikTok after sharing her tips for determining if you’re fully emptying your bowels daily

Kent’s first advised doing a transit test, which measures how long it takes for food to travel through the digestive tract. She suggested eating corn and white sesame seeds for dinner to see if they show up in the toilet the next morning

She noted that if you’re not fully emptying your bowels every single day, you are likely ‘pretty constipated,’ which can cause bloating, food sensitivities, fatigue, hormone imbalances, and other ‘unexplained’ chronic symptoms.

Kent’s first piece of advice is to do a transit test, which measures how long it takes for food to travel through the digestive tract.

‘Eat a half cup of corn at dinner and also have a tablespoon of white sesame seeds stirred in water. Drink that back the same meal, and see if they show up in the toilet the next morning,’ she said.

The expert told viewers that another indicator of constipation is having to excessively wipe after a bowel movement.

‘If you have to keep wiping, keep wiping, keep wiping, and that residue never seems to go away, it’s likely that you didn’t fully empty,’ she explained.

The volume of your bowel movement is also of utmost importance, according to the constipation expert.

‘Your volume will tell you everything you need to know about how much you’re eliminating from the day before,’ she said. ‘A little hint is that we want to be aiming for a high-volume bowel movement every single day.’

Finally, Kent suggested considering ‘how you feel after a bowel movement.’

Are you fully eliminating your bowels every day? 🌽💩🧻 most people don’t consider constipation if they’re pooping on the daily, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t backed up! The volume of your bowel movement is also of utmost importance, and the goal is to have a high-volume bowel movement once a day

‘You should feel satisfied and complete after your bowel movement,’ she concluded

Kent’s video has been viewed more than 1.1 million times and has received nearly 1,000 comments and questions about constipation

‘Do you feel bloated? Do you feel uncomfortable? Do you feel there is still some stool left to be eliminated?’ she asked.

‘If you’re feeling any of these sensations, then it’s likely that you did not fully eliminate. You should feel satisfied and complete after your bowel movement.’

Kent’s video has been viewed more than 1.1 million times and has received nearly 1,000 comments and questions about constipation.

‘I have always wondered if I’m pooping my full potential,’ one person wrote, while another added, ‘Not me watching this pooping 1-2 times per week my whole life.’

‘What if I poop three times a day but the quantity is small?’ someone else asked. ‘Almost no need to wipe afterwards.’

Kent filmed a follow-up video about what it means if you have several small bowel movements throughout the day, saying it’s likely a sign of constipation

‘I will say, though, that the more constipated someone is usually the smaller and more frequent their bowel movements are throughout the day,’ she said

Kent filmed a follow-up video to address the viewer’s question, saying it’s a ‘really common scenario’ that she wanted to address.

‘If you’re having three small bowel movements a day, then it’s likely that you are still constipated,’ she said. ‘It’s the volume of the stool that you’re eliminating that matters the most.

‘So of course the word “small” is subjective, and so we need to clarify here. Are you having three bowel movements with rabbit pellets every single day or are you having three small sausages every single day?’

Kent once again advised doing a transit test to determine what is going on.

‘Ideally, we’re all having one large satisfying full-volume bowel movement every single day, but for a lot of people that doesn’t happen,’ she said. ‘So of course, we need to be paying attention to the volume and the transit time as well.

‘I will say, though, that the more constipated someone is usually the smaller and more frequent their bowel movements are throughout the day. Until, of course, they get to a point where they’re not even having bowel movements some days.’
