Ah, TikTok. It’s the app that has given us so many weird and wonderful (and, admittedly, at times dangerous) beauty trends over the past few years. But from the moisture sandwich and rolling frozen cucumber across the skin to purple blusher and using fake tan as lip liner, the general consensus is that the app is a gold mine for easy and fun beauty intel.
The latest trend to have a major moment on the video-sharing app? Gym lips, a name coined by makeup artist Kelli Anne Sewell and that describes overlining your lips with a pencil that is very similar to your natural lip colour, before layering a nourishing lip balm or mask over the top. It adds a little “something” to your look without requiring a full face of makeup application – nicknamed as such because Kelli usually wears the combo to the gym.
“No one said I was reinventing the wheel, I realise a lip treatment is not futuristic, but I do think it's a fun name for a very 'no makeup makeup' overlined lip that looks like you're wearing makeup,” she explained in a recent TikTok video about the look, in response to it going viral. “You just have plump, juicy lips, AKA gym lips.”
She continued, "I originally called it gym lips because it was when I was on my way to the gym, I always throw on a lip, it's like the running joke that I would overline my lips and shove my brows up. But you can wear it to the airport, you can wear it to the shop for errands, whatever you want […] it's just picking a lip liner that's actually similar to your lip colour. Not something darker, not something lighter, just similar to your lip colour and then a lip mask. And it's catching on because I'm getting tagged in it 24/7!"
Want to get on the hype? Here are a couple of products to shop now to work the gym lips trend for yourself.
MAC Lip Pencil, £17 here
From Subculture to Spice, MAC’s lip pencils are definitely up there with the most popular on the market. With so many shades to choose from, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find a shade that’s close to your natural lip shade.
Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, £19 here
The next step is layering a lip mask over the top of your liner, and Laneige’s offering is a best seller. Despite its name it’s totally allowed to be used during the day, too – there are a few flavours on offer but we’re fans of the original.
To follow Kelli’s method to the letter, simply brush up your brows and you’re done. The gym session is optional, obvs.
