Who doesn’t envy the stunningly crafted hairdos of the ’90s supermodels and style icons. Want to learn how to do your hair like Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Jennifer Aniston, Alicia Silverstone… and pretty much every influencer today? It’s not as difficult as it looks. All you need is a hairdryer, a thickening spray, rollers and pins, a barrel brush and some hair spray, and you’re on your way to mastering the glamorous look. Still no clue where to start? Don’t panic, Express.co.uk consulted the expert hair stylists at Duck & Dry (London’s leading blow dry bar) to find out how to effortlessly recreate the look at home.
Step one
The fundamental first step to a good blow-dry is the foundation: your shampoo and conditioner.
Duck & Dry’s experts suggested avoiding deeply nourishing or heavy shampoos, conditioners, or hair masks before styling your hair.
They said: “Use products that are lightweight. We always use our Fine Feathers Shampoo & Conditioner which is specifically designed to add fullness and body without weighing down your locks.”
Step two
Never dry your hair completely straight away; you need to start with a rough dry.
The stylists said: “After washing, always rough dry your hair up to 80 percent before styling with heated tools – this avoids overheating and damage.”
If you’re already dried your hair, you could potentially use a spray bottle of water to make it damp again before you follow the remaining steps.
Step three
For a big, bouncy blow-dry, it’s essential to use a volumising, thickening spray that doesn’t weigh the curls down.
The experts said: “There are many of these sprays on the market to choose from and it is the key step that we never skip in our salons.
“Don’t be afraid to use products – you need them to add the fundamental grip your hairstyle needs while also building volume (both essential factors of a durable blow dry).
“In our salons, we use our Blow Dry In A Bottle Mega Volume Spray with every blow dry! This is the key for a big, bouncy, and long-lasting hairstyle because it uses natural extracts of white nettle, ginseng and honey locust to lift the roots and create body throughout while adding grip and light hold for a long-lasting style.
“Simply shake your spray of choice well and spritz evenly throughout the lengths.”
Step four
It’s time to split your hair into several workable sections using clips that won’t dent your hair.
The Duck & Dry team said: “Using a barrel brush, blow dry your hair in sections – directing the hairdryer upwards away from your face.
“For better holding curls, fix curls with pins or into rollers.
“Let your curls cool for two to five minutes before unpinning them to ensure the bounciest, long-lasting blow-dry.”
Step five
Finally, unpin your curls or take out your rollers and brush your hair out with a wide-tooth comb.
The stylists instructed: “Don’t be afraid to tousle your hair a little – this will inject more bounce and volume while softening the curls to achieve that signature ’90s blow dry look.
“Lightly spray hairspray onto your finished style from a distance to make your style more durable!”
Still pretty rubbish at creating the style yourself? You could head to any hair salon and ask for a ’90s blow-dry to get some tips.
The Duck & Dry team said: “If you need hands-on knowledge from our expert stylists, come to out of our ‘Blow Dry Workshops’ as part of our DUCK & LEARN experience which includes a one-on-one blow dry tutorial with one of our senior stylists so you can learn all the techniques yourself (there’s even a glass of prosecco involved)”
