The Academy Awards – or better known as the Oscars – have a long history when it comes to not rewarding incredible actors and actresses for some of their best and most iconic roles.
Take Glenn Close, for example. She’s been in an array of next level productions, including Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liasons, and to this day, has still been deprived of an award, despite being nominated 8 times.
Not to mention Leonardo DiCaprio. The Titanic star was the subject of plenty of memes up until 2016 when he finally won for his role in The Revenant. Simply because fans couldn’t believe that he’d never been credited for any of the major films he’s been in.
So, let’s take a look at some of the other biggest Hollywood stars who don’t have an Oscar.
Robert Downey Jr.
From Iron Man to Avengers, Robert Downey Jr. has been on our screens for a long time. He’s one of the most distinguished actors out there, yet for some reason, still hasn’t received an Academy Award.
Glenn Close
While she may not have an Oscar, Glenn Close does hold the record for receiving the most nominations without actually receiving one. The 75 year old has been acting for years, and has appeared in many big budget films.
Amy Adams
With 6 noms to her name, Amy Adams still hasn’t managed to claim one, either. Many fans still stand by the fact that she should have won the Oscar for her first nomination for Junebug in 2005.
John Goodman
Whether you recognise him for his voice acting on Monsters Inc. or you became a fan after his performance in The Big Lebowski, John has some impressive credits to his name. But the question still begs – why hasn’t he won an Oscar?
Toni Collette
Toni has starred in plenty of incredible films, including Little Miss Sunshine and The Sixth Sense. She’s a versatile actor and really gets stuck into her roles. But obviously not enough for the Oscars.
Tom Cruise
Here’s one that seems wild. The Top Gun star – who found a friend in the late Queen – has been nominated for an Academy Award 4 times, but a win has always been just out of reach. Most recently, he was up for Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia, but lost to Michael Caine.
Johnny Depp
Another actor who’s been acknowledged by the Academy but has never won. Mr Depp has a variety of other accolades to his name, plus a varied career. He’s previously been up for the Best Actor award three times, in 2004, 2005 and 2008, respectively.
Jim Carrey
While plenty of the other names on this list have at least been nominated for an Oscar, The Truman Show’s Jim Carrey has never even been up for an award. Despite his fruitful career and successful roles. Not to worry though, as he’s got a couple Golden Globes knocking about.
Liam Neeson
Liam was nominated way back in 1994 for his performance in Schindler’s List. Since then, he’s not even had a look in, and still remains – for some reason – Oscar-less. The 70 year old has had a successful career regardless, starring in the iconic film Love Actually, plus the thriller franchise, Taken.
Samuel L. Jackson
While the actor was finally awarded with an Honorary Oscar in 2022 for his lifetime achievement in film, the 74 year old has never actually received one for an individual performance.
He’s only been nominated once in 1995, where he lost Best Supporting Actor to Martin Landau for his role in Pulp Fiction.
The Oscars will air on 13th March at 12:00am GMT.
