‘I just won the lottery and won’t share the winnings with my husband

A woman has become infamous on the internet for refusing to share her lottery winnings with her husband.

On the social media platform Reddit, there is a forum called ‘Am I The Asshole’ in which people ask if they are morally right or wrong in any given situation.

Recently, a woman’s controversial post has sparked some heated debate, as she wishes to use her new wealth to go travelling by herself, instead of sharing her winnings with her husband.

The woman posted to the forum to say she has won ”semi-life-changing money” from a scratch card and has won “tens of thousands of dollars”.

She said her husband has asked her to put the money in their joint savings account, but she has said his request “doesn’t seem fair to me”.

She wrote: “I bought the ticket, scratched it, and cashed it in for the money myself.”

The woman argued that the lottery winnings were her own money and that she could spend it how she liked, as she said: “We have a joint account but also separate accounts for spending.”

Her husband wishes to use the money to continue to save for a home and car, but the woman has said she is going to use the money to go travelling by herself.

According to the woman, her husband was very upset at her decision and the pair have been arguing about it, which is why she was taken to the internet to decide if her decision is right or wrong.

The woman said: “My husband isn’t owed half of the money just because we are married.”

However, the most popular comments on the forum post have pointed out that the husband is indeed entitled to the money.

The top comment with over 15 thousand likes said: “Legally, yes he is entitled to half. Also, you are forgetting the for better or for worse part of marriage. Why would you not celebrate together?”

Other popular comments asked the woman “why are you married?” while another person asked: “Why don’t you like your husband?”

Somebody else said: “I think you’re very selfish. I get wanting to do something special for yourself as you brought the ticket and all but he’s your Husband. Jesus lady…”

In the comment section, the woman also revealed that she and her husband did not have separate finances before she bought the scratch card, which caused her more notoriety on the forum.

One person wrote: “If you brought the scratchie from a joint bank account, even more of an a*****!”

Another person replied: “If they file taxes jointly, he would also be on the hook for taxes on the money she wants to hoard for herself.”

Somebody else has written that the “marriage is now doomed, even if you split the money now”.

Another person said: “Ask a divorce lawyer if he is entitled to half the winnings when he leaves you.”

The woman’s post has gained thousands of comments but has now been deleted by moderators on the website, as they have said they do not allow arguments from romantic partners on the forum.
