Inside Serena Williams and Meghan Markle’s friendship from dating advice to baby showers

Speaking alongside Serena Williams, Prince Harry revealed how he likes to keep himself mentally and physically healthy.

But this isn’t the first time that the 37 year old has met the tennis professional.

In fact, Serena is a close friend of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, having known Meghan Markle for over a decade after meeting at the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami.

Since then, the rest has been history.

From baby showers to sporting success, here’s everything you need to know about Meghan’s friendship with the 40 year old sportswoman…

Their friendship started over a game of flag football

Though Meghan, 40, revealed on her blog The Tig that she’d met Serena in 2010, it wasn’t until 2014 that a friendship began to blossom.

The Duchess of Sussex, who was starring in Suits at the time, hit it off with mum-of-one Serena at a celebrity game of football – the DirecTV Beach Bowl.

Writing on The Tig, Meghan said: “We hit it off immediately, taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing in, and chatting not about tennis or acting, but about all the good old fashioned girlie stuff.”

She added: “She quickly became a confidante I would text when I was traveling, the friend I would rally around for her tennis matches, and the down-to-earth chick I was able to grab lunch with just a couple weeks ago in Toronto.”

Supporting Serena’s sporting success

Showing support for her friend, Meghan has supported Serena at various tennis events throughout the years.

After Serena won the US open in 2014, the Duchess of Sussex showed her support by posting a loving message on Twitter and did a similar post following her Australian open win in 2015.

But aside from the social media posts, mum-of-two Meghan has been spotting sitting courtside too.

In July 2018 Meghan attended Wimbledon alongside sister-in-law Kate Middleton to watch her friend from the sidelines.

Speaking of the support, Serena told ESPN: “Every year, for a couple years, she comes out to Wimbledon and has supported me. Now she's supporting me in a different role. But our friendship is still exactly the same. We always have supported each other, just been there for each other through a lot.”

Meghan later appeared at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in 2019.

Dating advice and confidante

With Meghan calling Serena her “confidante” it’s no surprise that she turned to her friend for advice when dealing with the consequences of dating a royal.

“I told her, ‘You’ve got to be who you are, Meghan. You can’t hide’,” the tennis acetold Vanity Fair in 2017.

Crossing the pond to be a part of Meghan and Harry’s bid day, Serena and her partner Alexis Ohanian attended the pair’s wedding at Windsor Castle in May 2018.

Parenting advice and baby showers

But as the duo have both become mothers, they have traded dating advice for parenting advice as Serena raises daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr and Meghan raises Archie and Lilibet.

For the September 2017 edition of Vogue,Meghan wished Serena all the best as a mother.

“She will be an amazing mom. The very best, because she is so attuned to balancing strength and sensitivity,” she said.

Returning the kindness, Serena reportedly co-hosted Meghan’s five-day baby shower celebration in New York alongside pals including Amal Clooney.

Support through the highs and lows

Following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s explosive bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March last year, Serena was quick to show her loyalty to her long-term friend

Posting on Instagram, she said: “I know first hand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of color to minimize us, to break us down and demonize us.”
