Channel 4 has been blighted with technical difficulties over the past couple of days, leading to the wrong episode of their top shows airing.

The confusing blip left viewers tuned in to E4 expecting the latest episode of Married At First Sight UK watching a repeat after the channel failed to rectify the issue in time.

Viewers ready to watch the much-awaited finale of the hit dating show were shocked and disappointed when a previously aired episode started playing out.

The repeated show froze after the first 15 minutes as a purple message popped up on screens saying: "Programmes will continue shortly."

At the time, E4 was quick to Tweet to explain the confusion, writing: "We're aware it's yesterday's episode of #MAFSUK playing out this evening and apologise.

"It's all down to our ongoing tech issues which we're working hard on. We'll update here as soon as we know more and when you'll be able to see the final episode of MAFS UK."

Programming fell into chaos earlier in the week after a faulty fire alarm disrupted the output from the London HQ affecting all output across Channel 4, E4 and More4.

Channel 4 is just one of many stations who use Red Bee Media to handle playout services and broadcasting technology.

The triggered alarm caused an "activation of the fire suppression systems", which took channels off air entirely.

The Times reports that smoke was detected, and the fire suppression system sucked all the oxygen out of the room, causing a "sonic wave" that shut down the transmission servers.

All three stations have also been faced with audio and subtitles issues since the initial disruption over the weekend.

Channel 4 said: "We continue to experience disruption to our services due to technical issues. We're working hard to resume our normal services and appreciate your continued understanding."

After apologising for the blunder, a spokesperson confirmed the final Married at First Sight UK episode would be made available to watch at 9 pm on E4 tonight, while the MAFS Afters will air at 10 pm. The episodes will then be available on ALL 4 shortly after.

The decision has no impact on the reunion show on Monday 4 October.

A spokesperson for E4 said: "Following the incident at the weekend, ongoing technical issues have meant that Thursday night's episode of Married at First Sight UK was a repeat from Wednesday 29th September."

"We apologise to the fans of the show and have worked hard to get the episode to you this evening at 9 pm.

"We hope that when you finally watch it, you can find out whether Amy & Josh, Tayah & Adam and Morag & Luke renew their vows."
