Fake tan on the face is always associated with acne, dry skin and a ‘fake’ look, but that doesn’t have to be the case. If you’re looking a little bit pale this winter, it’s absolutely fine to fake tan your face. Express.co.uk chatted to the experts at St Moriz to find out how to fake tan your face effectively.

When you’re developing acne or breakouts, the last thing you want to do is slather thick products on your skin.

Fake tan might seem like the kind of product that would worsen spots, but it’s quite the opposite.

Depending on which tan you use, slathering tan on your face could actually improve your skin.

The team at St Moriz said: “It’s crucial to look for a self-tanning product which contains skincare ingredients – especially moisturising elements such as salicylic acid, vitamin E and aloe vera, like St Moriz’s Clear Complexion Face Tanning Mist.”

Fake tan on the face can indirectly heal imperfections too, or at least make your skin look temporarily clearer while it’s on.

The experts said: “When it comes to acne sufferers, the warm, caramel tone of self-tan can counteract the red tones of active spots or scarring, leaving behind the illusion of a more seamless complexion.

“Wearing tan on the face also helps manifest a confidence to ditch the heavy foundations and concealers, which can clog up pores and provoke a vicious cycle.”

Don’t just slap the tan on your face and hope for the best!

You should follow a set routine to make sure it looks flawless and doesn’t cause any problems for your skin.

The tanning experts said: “We are all aware that exfoliating is a crucial step on body-tanning days, to avoid patchiness – this applies to your face.

“Ensure you’re prepping your face properly by a deep cleanse, followed by a face exfoliator so you’re left with the smooth canvas needed for an even skin tone.

“Before facial tanners were developed, we used to smudge a little body tan onto the face.

“Nowadays, we are more clued up on the benefits of applying skincare to the delicate skin on our face and the development of facial tanners in the tanning world have been revolutionary.”

If you can, exfoliate the face the day before you want to apply tan to your skin.

Then, moisturise and do your regular skincare routine as normal.

When it comes to the day you want to fake tan, cleanse your face and splash it with cold water before you apply the tan.

You can use the same fake tan on your body as your face, but it’s better to use a specific tan for the face.

Your face is more exposed to the elements than the rest of your body and you probably wash it more vigorously twice a day, so the colour will fade more quickly than on your body.

For this reason, you’ll need to tan your face more frequently than your body if you want to be golden all year round.

If you want to remove the tan, simply exfoliate and scrub it away (or just wait a few days – it will go!).
