Restaurants and pubs have had to temporarily close during the third lockdown, but this is soon set to change under Boris Johnson's roadmap revealed last month.

You can book a table and eat outside at pubs and restaurants from April 12, and from May 17, you'll be able to sit inside.

But for now, places that serve food are only allowed to serve takeaways.

We explain what services McDonald’s is running and its latest opening times:

Is McDonald’s open during lockdown?

McDonald’s is open under the latest coronavirus restrictions.

You can order food by going through a drive-thru or via home delivery through Uber Eats or Just Eat.

McDonald's revealed that it would stop being walk-in takeaways at the start of lockdown, but it started to bring this service back at some locations this week.

The fast food chain said a walk-in service will be available again in all its branches in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland from Monday February 22 onwards.

But before you make a trip, it’s best to check to see if your local restaurant is open by using the chain’s restaurant locator.

In previous lockdowns you could go in and get your McDonald's food to eat elsewhere.

Paul Pomroy, McDonald's boss for UK and Ireland, said: "A month ago we made the voluntary decision to temporarily close walk-in takeaway while we reviewed our safety measures to ensure they reflect the evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Working closely with third party safety expert NSF International, we identified a small number of changes to further enhance our procedures, and we are currently in the process of rolling these out to restaurants."

He has apologised to customers who have struggled to get food delivered and warned that orders may take longer than in usual times.

What Covid measures has McDonald’s introduced?

THE fast food chain has introduced a wide range of measures to keep staff and customers safe – these include:

  • Protective screens in its kitchen and service areas
  • Smaller teams in its kitchens to enable social distancing
  • Face coverings and daily temperature checks for all employees
  • Hand and bag sanitising stations and face coverings for its McDelivery partner couriers
  • Contact-free order and payment available via the My McDonald’s App
  • Enhanced cleaning of all surfaces and touchpoints

When does McDonald’s close during lockdown?

McDonald’s opening and closing times may vary from what customers are used to because of Covid-19 restrictions.

Under lockdown rules, pubs and restaurants can serve takeaway food and deliveries until 11pm.

Drive-thrus also can't be open later than 11pm.

It's best to check when your local branch is open using the chain’s restaurant locator.

How do I get McDonald's delivered?

McDonald's works with both Uber Eats and Just Eat for all its delivery orders – but not all restaurants offer both services.

You should also keep in mind that you'll pay a delivery charge on top of your order.

This usually depends on how far away from the restaurant you are.

Enter your postcode on Uber Eats and Just Eat to see if McDonald's delivery is available near you.

McDonald's will now also deliver food to your car so you can skip the drive-thru queue.

You can also use the My McDonald’s app to pre-order your food and pick it up.

The My McDonald’s app can be downloaded via the App Store or Google Play, and it doesn’t cost extra to click and collect.

The PM has said free school meals for low-income families will continue until March.
