DEAR DEIDRE: I FEEL like a horrible dad because I’ve booked to go on a stag weekend when I’d normally be celebrating my boy’s birthday with a family holiday.
My girlfriend is 26 and I’m 29.

My son will be five after Christmas and I’ve always taken his birthday week off, but his next birthday is also his first at proper school.
My girlfriend said I might as well go to the stag weekend, which is in Spain.
I paid for the trip, but now she’s saying we should let him start school the following week and go on holiday as a family instead.
It’s causing arguments between us.

My little lad is getting excited about his birthday.
Should I cancel the stag weekend and take him away as usual?
DEIDRE SAYS: No. He shouldn’t miss a week of school.
The worst thing to do to a child is to take them out at the start of a new term. It’s the most important time when friendships are formed and he’ll need to get familiar with the routine.
He will have the best of birthdays being in school with new friends and no doubt he will be made to feel special.
If you still want to go on the stag weekend, do go – and perhaps get home from Spain in time for your son’s return to school.
