What to look for in the January sales

There's plenty of ways to make savings in seasonal sales, especially if you're buying expensive items.

We recommend writing down a list of items (e.g. fridges, coffee machines, dishwashers) that you'd like to buy, along with their prices, and checking back during the sale to see if they're any cheaper.

Beds and mattresses

There's been a surge in the number of online-based mattress companies in recent years, with the likes of Casper, Simba and Nectar all competing to offer the best products and prices.

Shop around a few mattress sellers to get yourself the best price and the best savings.

A decent offer on a bed can be found at dozens of stores, including John Lewis, Argos, Dreams and Debenhams.

Cooking

Big brands such as Tefal and Le Creuset are often looking to shift pots and pans in sales periods so both are worth looking out for.

Other handy kitchen items such as Nutribullets, Joseph and Joseph accessories and pressure cookers are often discounted.

Furniture

You should be able to kit out every room in your house for a discount on, with everything from sofas, coffee tables and cushions available for less in the sale.

Check out general retailers such as John Lewis and Selfridges along with specialists such as Wayfair, Habitat and Made to get a good selection of offers.

Smart home

If you're interested in turning your house into a smart home, there's tons of gadgets and gizmos you can buy.

Get smart lighting with Hue, control your heating with Nest and help secure your house with smart doorbells from Ring.

These tech items are usually discounted in seasonal sales and can be found on the manufacturer websites and retailers such as Amazon.

White goods

Everything from fridges to washing machines to dishwashers are available at a cut price this January.

When buying something this expensive, it's worth doing your research first and working out exactly what features you require and if you're really getting a good deal.

You'll likely be holding onto white goods for a while, so it's worth checking out things such as energy efficiency, size and reliability.
