Kanye West’s recent hair transformation was actually performance art.
The rapper, 44, turned heads last week when he stepped out in Miami with a bizarre, uneven buzzcut hairstyle.
While some fans questioned if West let 8-year-old daughter North take clippers to his head, Kanye — who recently filed to legally shorten his name to “Ye” — revealed the real inspiration behind the look in a new 2-hour interview.
“The phobia of mental health, that’s why I did this haircut,’ West said on the Revolt TV podcast “Drink Champs.” “The declaration of insanity is a form of control… At first, I called it the Britney. Now they can call it the Ye.”
West was referring to the 2007 incident when Spears entered a salon in California after leaving rehab and buzzed off her hair and extensions when ex-husband Kevin Federline wouldn’t allow her to see her sons. She was placed in under a conservatorship shortly after.
“The fact that my haircut and my [new] name came at the same time was something,” West further explained. “This was harder than wearing the Trump hat because my image [is important]. I’m fly and you know as a black man, your haircut means so much.”
He added, “I’m a process artist so when you see the hair it’s a representation of my thoughts developing.”
It seems West has evolved quickly out of this phase, as he already buzzed off not only the uneven hair on his head, but also both of his eyebrows.
