Kate Middleton was photographed placing her hand on Prince William’s back today as they arrived at the Copper Box Arena. What was their body language like?
Judi James, a professional body language expert spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk to analyse Kate’s “subtle gesture”.
She said: “The body language displays from William and Kate today seem to have launched a new era of PDAs from the pair, who seem keen to signal their move up to direct heirs to the throne and to the title of Prince and Princess of Wales is not going to make their body language more formal or less natural and revealing, in fact quite the opposite.
“This is the couple signalling they want to be viewed as a strong and very loving team, both professionally and privately.
“By slightly intensifying her touches and her non-verbal signals of loving appreciation, Kate also lets us know that there is no change in the status levels between them either,” the expert claimed.
How does this compare to other royal couples?
Judi explained: “While Camilla tends to walk slightly behind Charles, watching and waiting for him to instigate the choreography, Kate shows a much more even-handed approach, where she is the one chatting a little more and placing an affectionate hand on William’s back in a subtle gesture of dominance rather than the other way round.
“Her hand is seen in two spots on William’s back, too, suggesting this isn’t a gesture that only lasted a short moment.
“In one pose she has her hand between his shoulder blades, with the fingertips in proper contact, and in the other pose the hand is in the middle of his back, nearer the waist as she talks to their hosts,” Judi noted.
She added: “Kate also moves in closer in a gesture of intimacy, leaning her head close to William’s and using eye contact in a romantic-looking ritual.
“The Princess also appears to be flattering William with her exaggerated laughter as he speaks.
“In one pose she leans back to laugh, opening her mouth and wrinkling her nose to suggest she finds him hilarious.
“This arching backwards and laughing is very similar to body language used by Diana to flatter people she was meeting as well as her husband,” Judi opined.
Are Kate and William’s gestures similar to those performed by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry?
Judi suggested: “Some of these gestures do look similar to ones used regularly by Harry and Meghan though.
“Plus, the back-touch does seem to have a similar function of registering almost parental-looking support and loving reassurance.
“The laughter is pure Kate though, and it seems to show her as William’s greatest fan as well as helping show the people they are meeting that they should also relax and share some of the sense of fun and enthusiasm on the visit.”
Kate donned a vintage Chanel blazer from 1995 for today’s visit.
She paired this with her Spells of Love twisted hoop earrings and her Astley Clarke necklace.
For her bottom half, the Princess of Wales opted for Roland Mouret ‘Axon’ trousers.
Finally, for her footwear, Kate wore her Gianvito Rossi ‘Piper’ pumps.
