The American Music Awards bring out the best in the music industry every fall. Now that the awards have been handed out, check out who dressed to impress and who let Wonderwall.com down at the event’s black carpet. First up? Don’t stand too close to Machine Gun Kelly! The star arrived in this custom Dolce & Gabbana pantsuit that certainly raised eyebrows — and not because of the bright purple color! Let’s take a closer look at the insane spike detailing on this look…
_
Machine Gun Kelly’s custom Dolce & Gabbana getup featured these intimidating long silver spikes throughout, begging the question… how would he sit down during the award show?
_
Upon first glance, we thought Carrie Underwood was continuing her streak of Dolce & Gabbana gowns. But this mosaic-like beauty is actually a Tony Ward design, with a halter-style neckline, sparkly thin straps that fell off the shoulders and a thigh-high slit. She also added a ring by Loree Rodkin. Next up? A better look at the beautiful pastel print…
_
Nicely done, Carrie Underwood! We loved the muted shades on a pale pink background, ushering in a springier vibe then most of the darker shades we saw on the black carpet.
_
Kelly Rowland brought some serious drama with a walk on the wild side in this Nicolas Jebran confection. The strapless ballgown included a sky-high slit and an all-over animal print, and we found this the perfect opportunity to incorporate the over-the-elbow gloves that have been trending lately.
_
Another good example of utilizing gloves perfectly? The addition of the accessories to Becky G’s Monsoori black gown, both in a complementary rich velvet fabric. The frock featured a high-low hemline and some fun structured detailing at the neckline, which we’ll see better next…
_
Gorgeous! We loved the addition of Becky G’s gloves, mainly because it added more velvet to the mix. Jewels from JustDesi rounded out her look.
_
Yikes! Lauren Jauregui arrived at the American Music Awards in this disaster from Norma Kamali. The gown featured head-to-toe embroidery — we’re talking a high neck, dramatic sleeves and a floor-length skirt — for an all over excessive ensemble that landed on the miss list.
_
Ellie Goulding brought some serious shimmer to the black carpet in this Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini look plucked right from the runway. We loved the unique neckline, complete with a high neck and crossover detail, and the floating sleeve detail from elbow to wrist. A high-waisted skirt completed the coordinates, and strappy sandals cemented this look as a hit.
_
Sabrina Carpenter certainly made an entrances in this Oscar de la Renta design. The star’s two piece look featured an all-over sparkle thanks to come shimmery floor-length fringe, and before we dive in we need to see it from another angle…
_
Sabrina Carpenter’s Oscar de la Renta ensemble was certainly a fresh take on the cropped coordinates trend. We loved that elaborate fringe and the way she committed to the metallic theme with matching silver sandals.
_
Bebe Rexha has been doing… a lot lately. Take this bright red Buerlangma disaster, complete with massive layered sleeves made of tulle, an equally busy skirt and a massive train that trailed behind her on the black carpet. Red leather Le Silla shoes added to the monochromatic vibe, though it was broken up a bit by our favorite styling element of this look — the black belt trying to reign in all that tulle.
_
Unfortunately, Bebe Rexha’s over the top red gown wasn’t the only one on the black carpet that night. Kali Uchis arrived in this satin custom Dilara Findikoglu design, complete with its own train, and added an equally busy red headpiece to the mix.
_
Country star MacKenzie Porter arrived in this shimmery golden gown by Cucculelli Shaheen. We loved the glimmering frock, with its elaborate embellishments and column-style silhouette, and the way she added simple David Yurman hoops to keep the shiny attention on the dress.
_
Nope! Sorry, Tinashe, but this black and white Marc Jacobs look landed on our miss list. The star wore a white cropped top with a low-waisted black skirt and added the accessory of the moment — gloves — for a funky outfit that didn’t feel cohesive. Check out her sunglasses next…
_
Just in case you weren’t sure who to blame for Tinashe’s American Music Awards ensemble, it’s written right on her sunglasses. The Marc Jacobs addition wasn’t our favorite, but we did appreciate one element of her look!
_
Those shoes! We might not have liked Tinashe’s ensemble, but we did really like those platform sandals.
_
What is going on!? After an embarrassing outfit repeat at the CMA Awards earlier this month, it appears Dove Cameron turned up in the same Marc Jacobs crop top as Tinashe. Dove, however, added a more voluminous skirt, but also opted for unnecessary gloves. Let’s check this one out up close…
_
Much like Tinashe’s look, we weren’t fans of Dove Cameron’s Marc Jacobs coordinates. The fingerless gloves certainly did not help matters.
_
Who doesn’t love a cool structured gown? Karrueche Tran donned one by Christian Siriano at the American Music Awards, which included one of the most dramatic necklines we’ve seen in a while. A keyhole cutout at the neckline and subtle mermaid-style silhouette made us fall for this look even harder.
_
We hope denim dresses don’t continue to trend in 2023! Kim Petras turned up in this Blumarine halter number in a dirty denim shade, complete with a mermaid-style skirt.
_
Meghan Trainor brought a pop of color to the black carpet, arriving in this custom Michael Costello pantsuit. Though we didn’t love the shirtless styling. we did love the wide-legged trousers and that dreamy pink shade.
_
Anitta’s custom Mugler had some cutouts we’re not quite sure we could show here! The front, however, featured a straightforward sheer paneling below the bust, finishing in a fun asymmetrical detail at the waist. That split divided an otherwise two-toned fashion moment — a white long-sleeved bodice and black fitted skirt — and her accessories elevated things to the next level.
_
Anitta donned an updo and these stunning drop earrings from Tiffany and Co. on American Music Awards night.
_
Sorry, Pink. Though we appreciated the fact that her minidress was vintage Bob Mackie, we weren’t wild about this look. The frock featured a high-neck and a funky bolt cutout down the center, but was otherwise a conflicting combo of yellow and black. Black sandals finished this underwhelming outfit.
_
Looking fab, Niecy Nash-Betts! The star arrived in this glamorous black gown, which included spaghetti straps and a fitted silhouette. Leather gloves took things up a notch, and she brought along a tiny black clutch to keep things monochromatic.
_
Charlie Puth’s light yellow suit felt a smidge too casual. If the color wasn’t funky enough, the addition of a white t-shirt made it feel even more underwhelming. He accessorized with a black belt and boots, cementing this look as a miss.
_
Jessie James Decker wowed in this little Mugler number. The long-sleeve minidress included cutouts and strappy details down the sleeves and bodice, with strappy black sandals matching the vibe of this slinky pick perfectly.
_
Country star Bailey Zimmerman didn’t dress for the occasion. The country crooner rocked ripped black jeans, a black t-shirt and brown suede jacket… then finished off his look with mismatched red sneakers.
_
Roselyn Sánchez arrived at the American Music Awards in this dramatic structured confection. With dreamy rich shades to the cutouts down the hips and the thigh-high slit, this design demanded attention. Structured sleeves anda perfectly fanned out train made this one of the boldest looks on the black carpet.
