An image of Kim Kardashian has been used to promote a salon providing ‘African hair styles’ in Brussels after the star was accused of ‘blackfishing’ in her Vogue cover shoot this week.

The reality star faced huge backlash after posing for the magazine’s March 2022 issue, with social media users claiming she was appropriating traditional African hairstyles.

Fashion influencer Diet Prada, who pointed out the star was modelling the traditional hairstyles in the Vogue shoot this week, has now shared a picture of the advert taken in Rue de Brabant.

The image, used without prior permission from the star, shows Kim, 41, wearing Fulani braids – a style popular with the Fula people, one of the largest ethnic groups in the Sahel and West Africa.

The post racked up thousands of likes and users were quick to point out that while the star had nothing to do with the advertisement, it contributes to the problem of ‘whitewashing’ black culture.

‘This is why people are against cultural appropriation. The whitewashing is real,’ wrote one.

‘The absolute madnesses of this city is beyond me. Brussels is really not okay’, said another infuriated user.

Television and radio presenter Clara Amfo also weighed in, simply commenting ‘Jesus’ on the post.

Earlier this week the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star was accused of blackfishing in her Vogue shoot, where she modelled African hairstyles and wore outfits similar to those worn by black icons

Fashion watchdog Diet Prada also pointed out in a separate Instagram post liked by supermodel Naomi Campbell, that the shoot was released in the middle of Black History Month.

‘It’s incredibly disrespectful. @voguemagazine this is blackfishing clearly. Kim is not a black woman. stop trying to make her happen. happily unfollowed Kim Kardashian & her wannabes. none should buy this magazine cover. have some respect!’, wrote one Twitter user.

Another said: ‘Kim Kardashian is beautiful and wealthy but i’m really over her always blackfishing and these Fashion magazines profiting from it…André Leon Talley should’ve had this month’s Vogue Cover.’

‘You’re seriously reaching of you don’t see this as blackfishing. This is not playing with styles, she’s a culture vulture. It’s not lighting, she’s trying to pass as black’, wrote a third.

The reality star also faced backlash in January 2018, when she posted pictures with beaded cornrows, which she called ‘Bo Derek braids’

The photograph used to promote the salon in Brussels was taken in 2018 during an appearance at the MTV Movie and TV Awards and faced backlash for appropriating black culture at the time.

Shortly after the event the star defended her right to wear the style, explaining to Bustle magazine that her mixed race daughter North wanted them to have a matching hairstyle.

‘I actually did that look because North said she wanted braids and asked if I would do them with her’, said Kim. ‘So we braided her hair and then we braided my hair.’

She also faced backlash in January 2018, when she posted pictures with beaded cornrows, which she called ‘Bo Derek braids’ in a reference to white actress Bo Derek’s look in look in 1979 comedy 10.

Kim also addressed claims she was appropriating black culture in a chat with i-D Magazine last year, insisting she ‘would never do anything to appropriate any culture’ in her style.

Earlier this week the star’s Vogue shoot was slammed by Twitter users who said the images were ‘disrespectful’ and labelled Kardashian a ‘culture vulture’

‘Honestly, a lot of the time it comes from my daughter asking us to do matching hair,’ the reality TV icon – who is mother to daughters North, eight, Chicago, three, and sons Saint, six, and Psalm, two, with estranged husband Kanye West, 44.

‘I’ve had these conversations with her that are like, ‘Hey, maybe this hairstyle would be better on you and not on me,” she said.

‘But I also want her to feel that I can do a hairstyle with her and not make it that big of a deal either if that’s something that she’s really asking for, and really wants.’

Kim pointed out her own cultural background, noting that ‘there’s also a history of braiding hair in Armenia, and people forget that I am Armenian as well.’

In the chat with the publication, Kardashian said she has ‘definitely learned over time, and… tried to pass that culture of learning onto [her] kids too.’
