The Royal Family may not have a lot in common with the average British person, bar a few similar habits – such as calling one another by endearing nicknames. William and Kate have nicknames for their children, the late Queen had a nickname, and, now, it has been revealed that King Charles had a nickname for Meghan Markle.
In her new book, The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown, royal biographer Katie Nicholl shared snippets of the royals’ private lives, including the supposed nicknames they have for one another.
She revealed that Charles apparently used to call Meghan by the name “Tungsten”.
This suggests the Duchess’ toughness and resilience as Tungsten is a hard, steel-gray metal of the third transition series that has the highest melting point of all metallic elements.
Katie wrote: “Charles reportedly nicknamed his future daughter-in-law ‘Tungsten’ because of her toughness and resilience.”
This is unsurprising as Meghan showed resilience when her name was splattered over the British press during the years she started dating Prince Harry and, later, when she joined the Royal Family and carried out royal duties.
Her resilience was once again suggested during her and Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey in March earlier this year, when she shared she had been suffering with ill mental health.
According to Katie, a specific example of when Meghan displayed a great degree of resilience was during her and Prince Harry’s 2018 appearance with Prince William and Kate Middleton at the Royal Foundation Forum.
One royal aide told Katie that William and Kate, who was heavily pregnant at the time, apparently “realised they needed to up their game”.
“The Cambridges [now the Prince and Princess of Wales] had already signaled their intention to be more than ‘ornamental royals’ and had, along with Harry, made a huge success of their mental health campaign Heads Together.”
Katie noted that it was Meghan who “was the breakout star of the foursome”.
The Duchess of Sussex was described as “polished, passionate and funny” and it was her “TV-honed skills” that helped showcase this side of her.
Apparently, this was a “wake-up moment for William and Kate when they realised that Meghan was very impressive, very confident and very capable, according to a source”.
In June 2018, an alternative source told the Daily Mail: “Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy.
“It’s become a term of endearment.”
The Duchess reportedly helped repair Charles and Harry’s relationship and Charles had a very positive first impression of Meghan – and vice versa.
“Meghan met Charles and was bowled over by his charm,” a Royal Family source told the Daily Mail.
“She told Harry he was wonderful: welcoming, warm, hard-working kind and stable. She made it clear that he should appreciate him and bond more.”
According to reports, Charles told friends about Meghan, saying: “She is so intelligent and so nice. She makes Harry happy. We could not like her more.”
It is not clear if the King still calls Meghan by her endearing nickname, but he did refer to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex during his first speech as King last month.
“I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas,” he said.
He did not, however, acknowledge the pair’s children, nor explain if they will acquire royal titles. Archie and Lili can now technically be Prince and Princess while their grandfather is sovereign, but the Royal Family website still has them listed as “Master” and “Miss”.
A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said: “While the website was updated for the Waleses [Kate, William, and their three children’s titles], clearly updating love on a website doesn’t quite work so we’ve not quite done that but clearly he does love them. We will be working through updating the website as and when we get information.”
