Labor holds emergency meeting to discuss religious discrimination bill

Labor is holding an urgent shadow cabinet meeting to discuss its position on the government’s religious discrimination bill after the Coalition party room endorsed the proposed legislation last night.

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese left an event attended by both sides of politics this morning, held to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, to meet senior party colleagues, with the general caucus to convene at 9.30am.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison last night secured party room support for a contentious religious discrimination bill package, despite moderate Liberals’ concerns.

It has forced Labor to decide whether to back laws that protect gay students from expulsion but not transgender students.

Last night, Labor MP Stephen Jones gave a moving speech about his gay teenage nephew who had taken his own life last week, and his own 14-year-old son who wears women’s clothing, as he said MPs must think about how this bill affects young people.

“What message do we want this Parliament to send to these kids? Are they as loved and cherished and respected as every other kid?” he said.

More to come.
