The 13in by 8in brown ink work by the Italian artist had been wrongly attributed to one of his students until 2019.
Dr Furio Rinaldi of auction house Christie’s and art historian Prof Paul Joannides said the man and two figures was drawn by Michelangelo in about 1496 when he was 21, imitating his idol Masaccio. It is his earliest known nude.
Michaelangelo went on to paint the Sistine Chapel in Rome and sculpt his masterpiece David.
Christie’s showed the sketch around the world before it sold to an anonymous bidder in Paris. Major museums have since asked to exhibit it.
