Madrid to Host 2021 Platino Awards and Inaugural Iberseries Platino Industria Forum

This year’s eighth edition of the itinerant Ibero-American Platino Awards (Premios Platino) will return to Madrid on Oct. 3, as will its brand new Iberseries Platino Industria forum, which will run Sept. 27 – Oct 1 at the IFEMA Palacio Municipal de Madrid, a massive conference center complex in the north of the Spanish capital.

Last year’s ceremony was, like so many, forced online by the COVID-19 pandemic. But, this time around, the Platinos are planning an in-person event to celebrate the best in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American audiovisual content.

Earlier this month it was announced that Madrid-based Egeda, the biggest rights collection society in the Spanish-speaking world, and the Secuoya Foundation, the non-profit promotion arm of Spain’s Secuoya Group Foundation, are joining forces to launch the Iberseries Platino Industria, a new festival and industry forum, win the run-up to the Premios Platino.

By combining Secuoya’s Iberseries Spanish-language TV festival, soft launched online last year, and Egeda’s Platino Industria market, the hybrid in-person and virtual event will screen world premieres of new and returning TV series from Latin America, Spain and Portugal. It will also play host to a series of panels, workshops, pitching sessions, exhibition facilities and one-to-one-meetings.

According to organizers, Iberseries Platino Industria will reflect the growth of a sector which has become an economic driver of social, cultural and tourist growth on both sides of the Atlantic and serves a global Portuguese and Spanish-speaking population of more than 840 million people.

News that the Industria and Awards ceremony will be held in Madrid will come as a relief to professionals in Spain and Portugal, whose fall calendars are already overflowing with back-to-back industry events in Conecta Fiction, a popular Europe-Latin America drama series co-production event unspooling Sept. 13-17 in Pamplona, and the San Sebastian Festival immediately after, running Sept. 17-25 and the Malaga Festival’s Spanish Screenings, taking place over Oct.20-23 in the week after Mipcom .

Spain just came out of a six-month state of emergency at the beginning of May, and is slowly revving up its vaccination drive after a sputtering start due to concerns surrounding the AstraZeneca vaccine. Organizers have guaranteed that whatever the COVID situation is come September, all necessary health and sanitation precautions will be taken.

The Platino Awards are promoted by EGEDA (Spain’s Entity for the Rights Management of Audiovisual Producers) and FIPCA (the Ibero-American Federation of Film and Audiovisual Producers) and with the support of the Ibero-American film academies and institutes as well as numerous sponsors in Europe and Latin America.
