The Malaga Festival’s Spanish Screenings, the only dedicated Spanish film sales and promotion market in Spain, has locked dates on the fall’s increasingly packed fest-market calendar, announcing it will run Oct. 20-23.
Now a fixture, celebrating its 15th edition in 2021 and part of Malaga’s far larger Malaga Festival Industry Zone (MAFIZ) umbrella of initiatives, the Spanish Screenings – Málaga de Cine will take place on-site in Malaga, a sun-kissed seaside city on Andalusia’s Costa del Sol.
The equivalent of the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris, the Spanish Screenings are backed, as in the past, by Spain’s Institute of Cinematography and Visual Arts (ICAA) and ICEX Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade, powerful and energetic government agencies. It is also supported by Spain’s main sales agents and Spanish film buyers from around the world, drawn as well by the chance of spring sunshine in its normal March berth.
Last year saw Malaga stage a physical Malaga Festival in late August, to the delight of its attendees, and then a totally online Spanish Screenings – Málaga de Cine in late November, due to restrictions on international travel.
Participants at 2020’s Spanish Screenings – Málaga de Cine included nearly 200 international distributors, 30 international fest execs, 13 sales agents and 120 producers.
A total of 108 films played in the different sections of the virtual event, which welcomed nearly 350 delegates from more than 200 companies.
Buyers and producers from the U.S., Greece, Germany, France, Brazil, Italy, Taiwan, China and Japan accounted for the majority of screenings’ attendees.
Malaga’s rejigged 2021 calendar will see its festival run as an in-person event on June 3-13. Split into Spanish WIP and Latam WIP, Malaga’s WIP pix-in-post showcases – which introduced buyers in 2019 to “The Platform,” a movie that eventually went on to become a Netflix No. 1 U.S. release – will take place online in June during the Malaga Festival.
Focusing on new talents – first or second feature projects with clear international co-production potential, said Malaga Industry Co-ordinator Annabelle Aramburu, – the Malaga Festival Fund & Co Production Event (MAFF) will also take place online during June’s festival.
The 2021 Spanish Screenings – Malaga de Cine joins a packed festival-market schedule, taking place the week after Rome’s MIA film-TV forum (Oct. 13-17), which runs back-to-back with MipJunior (Oct. 9-11) and Mipcom (Oct. 11-14).
Spain’s own industry events kick off with Conecta Fiction, a popular Europe-Latin America drama series co-production event, which unspools Sept. 13-17 in Pamplona, Spain. That’s followed by the San Sebastian Festival, which takes place Sept. 17-25, and the just announced new Iberseries Platino Industria, a Spanish-language drama series festival and film-TV market forum, which unspools Sept. 27-Oct. 1.
Spanish film-TV executives suffering from lockdown now have multiple options for travel.
