After her new official status as the ultimate Barbie girl, you’d be forgiven for thinking Margot Robbie would be sticking to all things pink for the foreseeable future.
However, it seems that even Barbies need a change now and then, and Margot has opted for a subtle metallic manicure that will make all the minimalists out there breathe a sigh of relief.
Although we’re still partial to a Barbiecore mani or two, there’s no denying that sometimes you want something a little more understated for your nails, and Margot’s micro chrome French tips are the perfect antidote to an all out pink look.
After visiting celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik, Margot left with a fresh set of minimal metallic nails that featured a nude base and ultra thin silver chrome tips, giving a futuristic update on the classic French manicure.
Sharing the photo on his Instagram, Tom revealed the look does still have some Barbie influences, writing: “We created a Micro French Chrome to complement 1992 Earring Magic Barbie’s look”, referring to the version of Barbie released 30 years ago, who wore a pink mesh mini dress with a silver star chain belt.
For the Mexico premiere of the new Barbie film, Margot recreated the look, wearing a neon pink mini dress with pink heels and the signature star belt, completing the outfit with oversized silver earrings and crimped hair, just like the original Barbie doll.
Margot’s new chrome mani was the perfect way to complement her outfit by picking up on the silver details, rather than going with the expected all pink look.
Tom also shared how he created Margot’s chrome nails, revealing he used the Aprés Nail Gel X Maisie Tips, £21.95 here, and the sold out Tweezerman x Tom Bachik Ultimate Nail Care Set to create a perfect base for the design.
Then all you need to do to recreate the look at home is follow your usual steps for creating a French manicure, but swap out the nude base for a silver or chrome nail varnish instead.
Try the Mavala Cyber Chic Mini Colour Nail Varnish, £5.12 here, or the Essie Original Nail Polish in shade Apres-Chic, £8.99 here, for a glossy metallic finish, and simply paint a subtle French tip across your nails after applying a nude base coat.
What makes Margot’s mani so chic is how thin the tips are, so a steady hand and a fine brush are key to replicating her unexpected Barbie look perfectly.
Alternatively, you could opt for some ready-painted false nails to copy Margot's look. The Kiss Voguish Fantasy French Nails – Bisous, £8.99 here, are an almost perfect match for Margot's subtle micro tips, whilst the Lottie London X KimKim Stay Press'd False Nails – Groovy Chrome, £8 here, have a unique design in a similar style.
We think we’ve just found our new favourite Barbie look!
