Eternals introduces 10 new superheroes to the MCU, and one of them is Makkari, played by Lauren Ridloff. In the film, Makkari is a deaf woman of color who has the power of super speed. However, in the comic books, she looks a lot different.

The character of Makkari is traditionally white, hearing, and a man. But as the writers and producers of Eternals did with many of their characters, they reimagined Makkari for the adaption.

As a result, Lauren Ridloff got to play the first deaf superhero in the MCU. And many fans hope to see more of her in the future.

During an interview with Marvel Entertainment, the Eternals cast answered questions from fans on Twitter. One user asked, “How has the journey filming Eternals changed your acting experience, and what is your favorite thing about being part of the MCU?”

Eternals actor Lauren Ridloff responded, “I think my favorite part about being in the MCU was getting to see the movie on the big screen. The first time that I saw the movie, I was sobbing! I mean, I was even sobbing before it started. I was a mess. And I can’t even believe that I was able to see the movie through my tears, but it’s inspirational. That’s definitely my favorite part of being in the MCU.”

The new Marvel star discusses the importance of deaf superheroes in the MCU

Lauren Ridloff sat down with Variety to talk about Eternals and what it was like to play the first deaf superhero in the MCU.

When asked about her future after Eternals, Ridloff said, “I’m hopeful that this movie will create more opportunities for myself, but also I’m very hopeful that this creates more opportunities for other deaf people [and] for people with other disabilities, not only in front of the camera but also behind the camera. We need more people in the writers room, we need more people involved with pre-production. We need people who are deaf or have disabilities.”

Ridloff also doubled down on the emotion she felt when she saw herself in Eternals. She said, “It felt like it was a lifetime of waiting. I didn’t really see anyone like myself ever represented on the screen … Finally seeing Makkari appear on the screen — wow. It was definitely life-changing. And I hope that this has the same impact on different communities, people who have been marginalized or are underrepresented in this industry.”

Fans can see Lauren Ridloff as the superhero Makkari in Eternals, now playing exclusively in theaters.
