The “Matilda” musical is headed from the West End to the big screen in the U.K. The beloved adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel will be released via Sony Pictures U.K. and Tristar Pictures in the U.K. and Ireland on December 2, 2022. The show will also head to homes all over the world in December via Netflix.
The adaptation stars Alisha Weir as Matilda, along with Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull, Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Matilda’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood, and Sindhu Vee as librarian Mrs. Phelps.
Matthew Warchus, who directed both the West End and Broadway productions of the show, will direct the film, which is being produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title, Jon Finn and Luke Kelly of The Roald Dahl Story Company. Dennis Kelly adapted the screenplay, which includes original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
The musical has been a critical and commercial hit, winning seven Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, and five Tony Awards. This is also the second “Matilda” film, following the 1996 adaptation of the novel, starring Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman.
Variety delivered a rave review of the West End show when it first opened.
“‘Matilda’ comes with a ready-made audience via generations who have feasted upon the original story,” David Benedict wrote. “But this transcends its source. As with ‘Billy Elliot,’ having the narrative led by the title character and numerous other children necessitates an expensive three casts. But ‘Matilda’ is so riotously enjoyable that if the figures can be made to work, its future could be limitless.”
