Catapulted the public eye, both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex are influential in their own right. Express.co.uk spoke to Judi James, a leading body language expert, about the royal women’s leadership styles.
Judi weighed in: “Both Kate and Meghan have leadership charisma that is almost forensically suited to their roles in life.
“Kate’s natural style is ‘Figurehead’ and a perfect fit to her future role as Queen. It relies heavily on visual presence and a calm approach plus a sense of history and continuity.
“The status is implied but not through Kate herself, who tends to win hearts via her more modest displays of status. She reveals little about herself to lead and rarely uses herself as an example.”
Meghan Markle, on the other hand, “has a more active ‘Campaigner’ style that is ideal for moving mountains”.
Her call to action is indicative that she’s heading for a more “political” role, suggested Judi.
“If Kate’s leadership style takes her to the throne Meghan’s would be more likely to take her into the White House.
“This is a high-energy and more urgent style of leadership where the leader takes a very central performance role. They will inspire the people they lead by rousing and memorable speeches that can change minds and gather loyalty.”
As opposed to Kate, who doesn’t tend to verbalise her own struggles, Meghan is more comfortable putting herself at the centre of the narrative, Judi indicated.
“Meghan has strong focus and drive and uses personal experience to create the kind of empathetic response that can create change.
“She is at her best on a stage with a large audience who will usually hear of her own experiences of prejudice, mental health, or what she describes as an ordinary upbringing and see her as an example of anything being possible.”
Despite her fame and title, many feel that they can relate to the Duchess of Sussex, as she “inspires large groups by seeming to speak on their behalf”.
Undoubtably, she has the “sensation factor’ that is crucial for public speaking and is “happy to cut through red tape and barriers to get her voice heard”.
Judi continued: “Although she has only dipped one toe in the political water so far, her leadership style might be well suited to that ‘change the world’ type of campaigning.”
As a talented actress, who starred in Suits between 2011 and 2018, Meghan is no stranger to speaking convincingly and emphatically.
However, Kate is happy to step back and let others enjoy the limelight, whilst supporting them from the sidelines.
“Kate is and will be a figurehead by her marriage to William and her natural leadership style seems to be as an encourager and empathist. Big talks on large stages would probably not be her thing, nor would leading campaigns for change that could be controversial.
“Her leadership qualities are every bit as powerful as Meghan’s, but Kate tends to adopt a quieter approach, even lowering her own signals of power and status to make others feel more confident around her.”
Her “slow-burn” approach is totally different to Meghan’s, which was made obvious when “the doomed ‘Fab Four’ were first presented to the public” onstage.
Their individual communication and leadership styles, with varying speeds and styles, wholly complement the influence they wish to have in the world.
Judi concluded: ” Kate’s leadership dazzle comes primarily from her elegance and her calm presence while Meghan’s comes from her sense of energy and urgency.”
