Meghan Markle said: “Because I’m turning 40, I am asking 40 friends to donate 40 minutes of their time to help mentor a woman who’s mobilising back into the workforce. “Over 2,000,000 women in the US alone and tens of millions around the world have lost their jobs due to Covid. I think if we all do it and all commit 40 minutes to some sort of active service we can create a ripple effect.”
Most of the senior royals all sent happy birthday messages on social media to the Duchess of Sussex, including Princess Eugenie.
She wrote on her Instagram story saying: “To celebrate dear Meghan’s 40th birthday I’m contributing 40 minutes of mentorship to support women reentering the workforce.
“In the past two years, tens of millions of women around the world have departed the workforce.
“If you can, please join me and commit 40 minutes to community, service or mentorship.”
She captioned the story with the slogan: “For women who give everything, we give our time. Are you in? #40×40.”
Eugenie highlighted a letter in each word in pink, so it formed the word: ‘FORTY’, in celebration of Meghan’s 40th birthday.
This post on Eugenie’s Instagram story came after some reports of the Princess apparently surprised that her cousin Prince Harry is releasing a memoir.
But Eugenie has long been close with Harry and is said to have played a key role in helping him meet the Duchess of Sussex.
Eugenie and her older sister Princess Beatrice were close with William and Harry growing up, spending summer holidays at Balmoral and playing together at Sandringham.
Princess Diana was close with Sarah Ferguson and they spent several ski holidays together as an extended family in the 1990s.
Eugenie and Harry are just five years apart in age and according to royal reports, Harry often confided in his cousin about his dating life.
In Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand said: “Out of all the Queen’s grandchildren, Harry and Eugenie have one of the most natural connections.
“Like Harry, Eugenie is loyal, honest and great fun. The two had many nights out together in London, sneaking into back entrances of clubs, such as Mahiki, where Jack once was manager, or Tonteria, where in one of the VIP cave areas they downed shots from Mexican skull shaped glasses and a giant frozen margarita (with multiple straws).”
Eugenie is good friends with Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend’s Chelsy Davy and Cressida Bonas.
Chelsy even attended Eugenie’s wedding in 2018.
Eugenie is one of the only members of the Royal Family who is believed to have maintained a close relationship with Meghan and Harry since they moved to LA.
This was confirmed by Meghan in her bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021, when she explained that she and Eugenie had known each other before she met Harry.
“Eugenie and I had known each other before I had known Harry, so that was comfortable,” Meghan told Oprah, “we’re friends with them as a couple.”
Eugenie and Jack were photographed with Harry and Meghan at a Halloween party at Soho House in Toronto in 2016 before the Duke had publicly confirmed the pair were dating.
The relationship between the princess and the Duchess has clearly remained a close one, judging by Eugenie’s Instagram story on Wednesday.
A royal source told the Sunday Express in 2017: “Eugenie loves Meghan to bits and believes she is perfect for Harry.
“They are thick as thieves and may even all go on holiday together soon.”
