After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down from being senior working royal, they found themselves miles apart – literally – from the Royal Family. Having moved to America in March 2020, the couple reportedly became close with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland. There has been only a few times Meghan and Doria have been pictured together in public, but what does their body language say about their relationship when they were seen in one another’s company? Express.co.uk spoke to expert Judi James.

Meghan and Doria, 65, share a close relationship and have given glimpses of their bong throughout Meghan’s time in the public eye.

Before Meghan’s romance with Prince Harry, the former Suits actress invited Doria as her plus-one to the 205 UN Women’s 20th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference of Women in Beijing held in New York City.

Doria was also pictured with Meghan at the closing ceremony of the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto, where Meghan and Prince Harry made their debut as a couple.

For her royal wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan spent the night with her mother at Cliveden House Hotel.

Doria then officially met the public when she rode with Meghan to St. George’s chapel during the royal wedding proceedings.

When Meghan hosted a celebration mark the publication of Together: Our Community Cookbook, which the Duchess helped create to benefit those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy, Doria traveled to the UK to attend.

She stood next to Prince Harry and watched as Meghan gave an impromptu speech about the project.

In May 2019, when Meghan gave birth to Archie, Doria travelled to the UK and stayed with the couple at Frogmore Cottage to assist them during their early days as parents.

Shortly after Meghan and Harry introduced Archie to the world, they shared an image of him meeting the Queen and Prince Philip and Doria was included in the historic photo.

Doria was also the Sussex family’s photographer for their 2020 Christmas card – a picture of Meghan, Prince Harry, Archie and their family dogs playing outside.

It has been widely reported that Doria has become a more permanent fixture in Meghan and Harry’s life since their move across the pond.

According to US Weekly, Doria reportedly helps Archie, 2, “get up in the morning and read to him” along with helping Meghan make Archie’s ”all-organic” food from scratch.

When Meghan, who was heavily pregnant with Lilibet, five months, and advised by doctors not to travel to the UK for the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral back in April, it was likely Doria would be on hand to help her daughter while Harry attended the service.

The Duchess of Sussex has previously spoken about the relationship she has with her mum.

In a 2017 interview with Glamour, Meghan said: “We can just have so much fun together, and yet, I’ll still find so much solace in her support. That duality coexists the same way it would in a best friend.”

So what is their relationship like from a body language expert’s point of view?

Judi explained: “Doria seems to tick all the right boxes for Meghan, both as a mother and as a member of ‘Team Sussex’.

“Their body language together looks relaxed and affectionate, with Meghan often signalling a quiet deference to her mother by standing slightly behind her or using face-checking eye contact to connect and share her thoughts.

“Doria, in return, provides an air of quiet but elegant confidence that implies she is a calming, supportive presence and, possibly most importantly she keeps resolutely silent and discreet in public.

“All we really know of her is her kind smile and her ability to cope so well standing in the pews alone as her daughter married a royal in a foreign country,” she added.

“The two women often use mirrored body language, with Meghan providing some of the truncated touch gestures that suggest their relationship is normally tactile.

“When Doria arrived in the UK it was also interesting to see how Meghan invested all her attention in her mother with even her beloved Harry being pushed gently to one side as the women walked together chatting and smiling.”
