Men could beat erectile dysfunction with new treatment – but it’s not for the faint hearted

ERECTILE dysfunction is thought to effect around one in ten men in the UK.

But for those who suffer with the condition a new treatment could help – although it's not for the faint hearted.

Researchers have revealed that stem cells could tackle impotence – the only downside is that blokes would have to have the cells injected directly into the penis.

Two studies found that men who had the injection also had improved sexual function.

There are many different causes of erectile dysfunction and in many cases, it comes down to stress, tiredness, anxiety or drinking too much, but it can also be caused by physical or emotional issues.

High blood pressure or high cholesterol can also be a factor, or in some instances it's a hormone imbalance.

Treatment for erectile dysfunction are available – but they depend on the underlying reasons for the condition.

Some of the causes can be treated with medication, but in other cases it's a matter of making some lifestyle changes.

Don’t want to try a stem cell injection – here are some others ways to stop erectile dysfunction

Here’s a few remedies you can try

  1. Medication: In order to receive medication for ED you have to have a consultation with a GMC registered doctor and if they think it's necessary they will write you a prescription.
  2. Penis pump: This is a device that is used to treat ED
  3. Creams: Again, like medication, you would need to speak to a medical profession before being given a cream for ED.
  4. Talk to your partner: LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor, Dr Sameer Sanghvi said while talking to your partner can be difficult, it could help address the issues you are facing.
  5. Exercise: Exercise before sex can also help relieve performance stress by releasing endorphins, which can improve your mood and reduce stress.

Stem cells are the building blocks of human tissue and could be an alternative to other treatments.

Writing in the journal Urology International the experts said 22 men with both erectile dysfunction and diabetes were given two stem cell jabs.

They were administered in the base of the penis and the experts said the men reported improvements in their erections in a matter of days.

The experts said the the effects from the stem cells last up to a year and that there were no side-effects.

A separate study, published in the journal of Cytotherapy found that stem cells improved erectile dysfunction in 40 per cent of the men it was tested on.

For this study, stem cells were taken from the bone marrow of ten men with erectile dyusfunction and were then injected into the corpus cavernosum smooth muscle (CCSM) in the penis, the Mail reported.

Almost all the men in the study said they had improved sexual prowess after the injections.

Experts have been using stem cells to treat various conditions for years.

They hope that stem cell studies can help them understand how disease occurs.

Stem cells are also used to help healthy cells replace diseased cells.
