We imagine when Michelle Keegan books in for a hair appointment, the colourist probably has to book off an entire half day to get the job done. The Our Girl star has so much incredible natural volume that it must take her hours to have a colour and a blow dry.
The man to ask is Calum Tierney, a Wella celebrity colourist who’s been doing Michelle’s hair for some time now. He’s also just taken the star from quite a dark brunette shade to a honey, and very tonal, bronde (brunette/blonde mix)– and as usual, the results are gorgeous.
Michelle features in a Reels video he posted to his grid last night, where her new highlights can be seen in all their glory. Calum, who worked on the star’s hair at Terence Paul Hairdressing, also tells us that he used a combination of two techniques – colour contouring and airtouch balayage – to achieve these ultra-glossy, face framing results.
“This is my signature colour technique called colour contour. I’ve used this to take Michelle’s hair a bit lighter than usual,” he tells OK! . “I used Wella hair colour, and since we wanted to go a little sunkissed with look, I used an airtouch balayage technique at the back of the head, and I colour contoured the front sections.
“It’s a super low-maintenance look, and the contoured sections at the front help to lift and brighten the skin.”
Calum also adds: “This type of colour looks good on most hair types, and ‘lived in’ hair like this is such a big trend right now.”
So, what is an air touch balayage? It involves taking a section of the hair and blow drying it so that some of the strands fall out of the section. It replaces the teasing technique where a colourist would backcomb a section to remove some strands of hair. The finished results should show on hair as natural brightness without any chunky highlights visible.
Michelle first showed off a contoured hair look back in 2020, when Calum posted an envy-inducing video of the actress showing off her newly coloured hair. Back then, her brunette lengths were rich and chocolatey in shade, but featured the subtle framing sections around her face.
Since Michelle recently got back from a sun-soaked holiday in Mexico, perhaps she was inspired to go lighter with her look for this salon trip. Personally, we love her both bronde and brunette.
