Mrs Hinch fans use common type of oil to get rid of spiders in their homes

A fear of spiders is the UK’s number one phobia, and according to research by lastminute.com 45% of Brits hate the idea of sharing their kitchen with arachnids.

But the good news is that fans of cleaning enthusiast Mrs Hinch have come to the rescue with a simple hack to keep spiders out of your home for good!

Mrs Hinch fans are regularly sharing cleaning advice with each other across social media, including the popular Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page.

Recently Alyson Gnessen wrote: “Does anyone have any good remedies to stop spiders coming in please? They’re annoying.”

And members of the group didn’t disappoint as they shared a hack for a natural way to get rid of spiders in your home.

Use peppermint oil to get rid of spiders

In response to Alyson’s question, Mrs Hinch fans gave their best advice for tackling spider problems in the comments.

And the solution is simple, peppermint oil.

Commenters claimed that peppermint oil works wonders when it comes to keeping spiders away.

Nicola McKinnon wrote: “I wash my floors and then I go over with a mixture of water and peppermint oil, so easy.”

They explained that the hack was simple to do.

Lorna Stanfield said: “Peppermint oil with a drop of water in a spray bottle. Squirt round vents on windows, walls, near your front and back doors. Not many get in my house.”

Amber Milsom commented: “Peppermint oil with water and sprayed around everywhere.”

Not only is the trick easy, but affordable too, with peppermint oil being available for as little as £1 a bottle.

Why does peppermint oil repel spiders?

Spiders smell and taste with their legs, and strong smells and tastes mess with their senses.

An overwhelming smell of peppermint will repel spiders because they dislike the strong odour.

While peppermint is one of the most effective natural oils for deterring spiders, other strong-smelling oils will work too.

It’s not just an effective method for banishing spiders, peppermint oil can also be used to get rid of mice and rats as the strong smell irritates their nasal cavities.
