Mum sparks outrage after sharing her seemingly innocent school lunchbox idea – so what’s the problem with the sandwich?
- An Aussie mum has been slammed for one detail in her son’s lunchbox
- Tara packed the lunchbox with a sandwich, fruit, yoghurt, popcorn and snacks
- But the ham, cheese and mayonnaise sandwich was criticised by others
- Some claimed it wasn’t ‘safe’ in summer heat and could lead to food poisoning
- Tara reassured those worried that she packed an ice pack in the lunchbox
An Australian mum has copped criticism from other parents online for one tiny detail about her son’s seemingly innocent school lunchbox.
Tara was happy with the lunch she prepared for her little one, which included a sandwich, yoghurt, grapes, biscuits with Vegemite, popcorn and some red pickled onions.
But after sharing an image to the Aldi Mums Facebook group, the ham, cheese and mayonnaise sandwich was quickly critiqued by others.
One mum raised concern as to whether the sandwich ingredients were safe during Australia’s hot summer, as it could lead to ‘food poisoning’ if left in the child’s bag until lunchtime.

‘Never gave my children meat on their school lunches in the summer heat,’ the woman wrote.
‘Even if you put an ice brick in their lunch box it soon gets hot. What each classroom needs [is] a small fridge so kids can put their lunch in.
‘They won’t get sick if they go without just one food item, but could get food poisoning from meat that has gone off. Plenty of other food items you can use as a substitute,’ she continued.
Another mum agreed and encouraged Tara to ‘be careful with the summer heat’ as it can affect foods not kept in the fridge.
‘They really need to supply fridges in classrooms so children can put their lunches and drinks in there,’ she said.
Tara quickly responded and said she ensures she places an icepack alongside the lunchbox to keep the food chill, claiming it’s ‘usually still cold’ after school.

Despite the conflicting opinions, many supported Tara and were frustrated by the nasty critiques.
‘Back when we went to school your ham sandwich was in your lunchbox in your school bag out in the sun with no cold packs. We must have been tough back then,’ one person wrote.
‘This looks great, especially those pickled onions! I love looking at Instagram for lunch ideas,’ another added.
A third added: ‘I had ham sandwiches at school when I was a kid, not ice bricks, I lived to tell the tale.’
‘That’s a fantastic, balanced lunch, well done,’ another said, praising Tara.
