DEAR DEIDRE: I WAS trying to rebuild the trust after my boyfriend admitted to a “kiss and a fumble” with a woman in his home town, when I discovered he’d been cheating with a friend of mine.
We’re at university and have been together for two years. I’m 20, my boyfriend is 22 and we live in a shared house.

Over the Easter holidays my instincts told me there was something wrong when he hardly contacted me.
Then the night before he was due back at uni he rang me in tears to tell me he’d got drunk and “given into temptation” with another girl.
I was heartbroken and so was he.
When he came back he was absolutely amazing, bringing me breakfast in bed, apologising and repeatedly telling me how much he regretted straying.
We had a few arguments because I felt so insecure but he did his best to reassure me and I was beginning to believe it.
That was until one of our other housemates, a female friend who is 21, confided that they had a similar “fumble” early on in our relationship.
I’m absolutely furious and feel like the one idiot who didn’t know what my boyfriend was really like.
As for my pal, I can’t even look at her — cheating with a friend’s bloke isn’t in the rule book in my mind.
My boyfriend is trying to build back my trust again but I’m not letting him anywhere near me.

I’m looking at other short-term accommodation, to get me through to graduation this summer.
I wanted this relationship to work but I don’t know how it can now.

DEIDRE SAYS: It was guilt that made him confess he kissed this other girl.
But he’d done it before, with your friend, so it’s no surprise you struggle to trust him.
He may genuinely want to be with you, but kissing other girls is a funny way of showing it.
Much depends now on whether you are prepared to give him yet another chance.
You must ask yourself if he really deserves it.
I’ve always thought the “two strikes and you’re out” rule is pretty solid.
However, if you really want to give him the benefit of the doubt, I would suggest at the very least he is made to consider why he keeps cheating and how he can change his habit.
Is he prepared to be honest? Does he really want to make your relationship work?
