My daughter thinks changing her appearance will help her find a boyfriend

DEAR DEIDRE: WEARING dresses and make-up will solve all my daughter’s troubles, she believes.

She is 18 and has always been a tomboy.

She is desperate for a boyfriend. I am her mum aged 49.

In secondary school she went out with a boy for a while but that didn’t last.

Then a guy she went walking with during the pandemic turned out too full-on for her.

Now she wants to go out in town with friends but wants to change her image. I have told her she should be confident with who she is.

DEIDRE SAYS: You are right – it’s the person underneath who is important. But there really is no harm in her trying out a different style.

It’s natural for teenagers to experiment with looks, so let her explore and discover her own image, which may change many times over the next few years.

Suggest she goes shopping with a good friend who may tweak her style enough to make her feel more confident, without getting totally out of her comfort zone.
