My husband is too nice and his family keep taking advantage of it

DEAR DEIDRE: I AM happily married with two children and a third on the way. I am 32 and my husband is 34.

He is lovely – much too lovely, in fact, and his family takes advantage of his good nature.

I liked that he was such a family man when I first met him but now it is to the detriment of our own family.

Our kids, aged five and three, are very demanding. Now we have a third on the way I am worried about being left to look after them all on my own.

I am starting to resent my husband and his family. He currently looks after his sister’s daughter every Thursday and on his other day off is always doing odd jobs for his mum.

This is not the family life I had imagined.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your husband sounds like a very loving man. Don’t forget why you first fell for him. But you definitely need to put in place some boundaries to establish some family time.

Talk to your husband calmly and explain how worried you are. Can you ask him to set aside at least one day for your family?

Ask him to always consult with you before agreeing to do favours for his family. That way you can plan family events with him involved. This slight shift will help everyone see he has other commitments that need to come first.
