DEAR DEIDRE: MY dream is simple – to become a mum – but I’m terrified my kids would end up with the same mental illnesses as me.
I’m a woman of 37 and have struggled since I was 15.
I’ve self-harmed and had bouts of depression and anorexia.
I seem to attract people who treat me badly – I was even pimped out by one boyfriend. Now the guys who like me have addictions or are abusive.
One guy got me into drugs but I’m clean now.
I live in a flat and work in a supermarket, and long to have a family of my own.
Do you think I’d be a good mum? Or would my depression and self-harming pass on to any kids?

DEIDRE SAYS: No, not necessarily. It’s thought that some more severe mental illnesses can be passed down but it certainly isn’t a given.
If a mental illness affects members of the same family, it is not purely down to genetics. Other factors come into play.
You’ve recovered from your addictions so have every chance of being a good mum.
Keep looking after yourself to ensure you can make good choices which will ultimately have a positive impact on any future children.
