DEAR DEIDRE: OUR little family was just starting to take shape but now I’m worried I may lose my wife. We are only two years into our marriage.
We have a baby boy who is now six months old. We are both 36 and we took a long time to conceive.
My wife confessed recently to feeling really down. I asked her if it was me and she said: “No. I honestly don’t know why I’m feeling this way.”

She packed her things and went to stay with her parents, taking our son with her.
We’ve had limited contact, as I want to give her some space but she has sent me a couple of pictures of our son.
I desperately want them back but I don’t know what’s happening to us.
Has she gone for good?
DEIDRE SAYS: I hope not, but she needs a better understanding of why she is feeling unhappy and she may have post-natal depression.
The first person she should talk to is her doctor, who will be able to help.
She can also find help from the Pandas Foundation (pandasfoundation.org.uk, 0808 1961 776), which supports parents through perinatal illness.
Tell her you love her and you can’t wait for her to be home but support her by being there for your son, taking him out and giving her time for herself.
If things don’t improve in a few months, insist that you get some couples’ counselling to see where you go from here.
