New campaign urges anyone with cancer symptoms to get checked as soon as possible

ANYONE with cancer fears should get checked as soon as possible, a new campaign urges.

NHS chiefs hope the major push will help them catch 100,000 more cases early each year.

Statistics show one in five people will ignore symptoms such as tummy trouble, unexplained pain, weight loss, or blood in urine in the hope they would just go away.

A third fear they will be wasting their doctor’s time.

Many cancers are treatable if caught early.

And 90 per cent of those who have symptoms checked do not end up having the disease.

Around 375,000 people are diagnosed with a cancer each year.

Officials want three in four caught early by 2028.

Currently, only half are identified at stage one or two.

NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard said: “We want to allay people’s fear about cancer and encourage them to get checked without delay.

“We would always prefer to see you sooner with a cancer that is easier to treat, than later with one that isn’t.”
