ALDI has hinted that Kevin the Carrot has been axed from its Christmas advert in 2021.
The animated carrot has been the star of supermarket's festive campaign for five years, winning thousands of fans across the UK.
Judging by a teaser clip released by Aldi today, he'll be replaced by a banana called Ebanana Srcooge – based on A Christmas Carol's Ebeneezer Scrooge.
The 20 second video shows a child Ebanana patiently waiting for Santa with a mince pie by the fire on Christmas eve.
But then a mystery hand appears and takes the mince pie, leaving the banana behind.
He then says: "Santa, wait…why didn’t he take me?", followed by: "I hate Christmas…" – leaving viewers wondering what happens next.
The full advert will be released online and across national TV channels on Thursday, November 11.
Fans are likely to be disappointed by the news as Kevin has become extremely popular over the years.
Aldi was forced to bring in a digital queuing system, usually used to manage Glastonbury ticket sales, to manage demand for a cuddly toy version of the carrot last year.
In 2019 the toys quickly sold out and then reappeared on eBay with price tags of up to £1,000.
John Lewis revealed its highly-anticipated Christmas 2021 advert on Thursday, featuring an alien who falls to earth.
Marks & Spencer also launched its festive campaign with Percy Pig centre stage.
