Olympic Skateboarder Nyjah Huston Trains 5 Days a Week to Shred Like Tony Hawk

Just like Mark Wahlberg and Tom Brady, Nyjah Huston—perhaps the greatest skateboarder in the world—gets down and dirty in the gym five times a week. He invited Men’s Health into his home, giving us a glimpse into his weekly workout routine as well as the fridge that fuels his regime.

Huston has an intense workout, which is surprising considering he only started beefing up a few years ago. Sure, he trained—as professional athletes do, but was he crushing those lunges, committing to HIIT exercises, or hell, working out most days? Nope. But, now is a different story: he even admits to us that he spends more time at his home gym than his own bedroom. Sheesh. “No one used to train for skating [or] workout in the gym,” he explains. “It just wasn’t a thing. It’s always been an individual sport. With the Olympics coming up, that’s why people [are] taking it more seriously and actually being more healthy and being in the gym.”

As for day-to-day workout routine? It’s not stagnant; it depends on how he’s feeling. Though he does use a signature workout item: compression cuffs. “ Even if I can’t get a hard workout in, I’m still going to be here at least doing a couple of things to help stay strong and feel good as a person,” he says. And, if he’s feeling really good, then he’ll go out to his skate park and practice a bit on his board.

Skating (among other things) is what keeps his mind fit—and is the sole motivation to keep going. Athletes can’t stay players forever, and Huston knows this, though he refuses to sit idly by when he’s not riding the rails. “The important thing to me is being productive,” he explains. “It helps me feel good as a person, helps me feel strong, helps me feel like I’m doing something throughout my days. That’s why his fitness goal is to simply be fit. Hell, his motto is: if Tony Hawk, 53, is still shredding, then I can too.

And, that’s why his fridge is filled with fresh fruits and vegetables. Green juice. Orange juice. Avocados. Mangos. Healthy shit, you know? Though he’s not the most active of a cook, breakfast is his go-to. A bit of sausage, toast, and spinach is what gets him hyped up for the day. Of course, you can’t forget the avocado.

Though he’s committing to being as fit as possible, he still has his cheat days (remember, he’s human, guys). Sweets. The one thing he can’t resist. Cookies. Cake. Apple pie: “My mom used to bake so many vegan goods when I was a kid, and I was always so hyped. Man, I miss those.”
