Partner's racist mother resents me and asks when I am returning to Ukraine | The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: MY partner’s mother is racist and it’s affecting our relationship badly.

I’m a 31-year-old Ukrainian woman and my partner and I met two years before the war, when we were on holiday in Jamaica.

When war broke out he immediately offered me a safe haven in the UK, but his mother didn’t approve.

Now she constantly makes my life very difficult.

I have told her many times that I am not an illegal immigrant and work hard as a cleaner to pay my own way.

My partner is 34 and his mum is 56.

She often asks when I’m going back to Ukraine. I have tried very hard, but when I speak she looks to my partner to translate, even though I speak good English.

My partner is very loving but he’s a mummy’s boy and doesn’t stick up for me.

I am dreading Christmas at hers. What should I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: Your partner must feel torn between you both.

Perhaps he wants to stand up for you but doesn’t know how to. In a calm moment, ask him to explain to her that he has chosen and loves you, and would appreciate her  support.

Her comments are making life difficult for you both and he needs them to stop.

My support pack Standing Up For Yourself will help you and your partner to learn some assertiveness skills to help you tackle this too.
