In 2020, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry shocked the world when they stepped down as senior royals. Afterward, the couple moved to California.
While many people were under the impression that Meghan and Harry would be staying out of the spotlight while living in the United States, they have done the opposite. A critic recently said people are “fed up” of the Sussexes complaining, especially when they live in an expensive mansion.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have shared grievances publicly
A few months after they settled down in Montecito, California, royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand published the book Finding Freedom. It shared some complaints the Sussexes had about the royal family and had some contributions from Meghan.
In March 2021, CBS also aired Meghan and Harry’s tell-all interview with Oprah. Here, they went into more detail about why they were unhappy in the royal family. They accused an unnamed royal of making racially insensitive comments and claimed they were mistreated by the institution.
Harry also appeared on the podcast Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard to talk about his childhood in the royal family. He accused Prince Charles of passing on “genetic pain and suffering” to him.
Then, Harry appeared on the Apple TV+ series The Me You Can See to talk in detail about his mental health. He revealed his mother’s death in 1997 greatly affected him.
It has also been announced that Harry will publish a memoir in 2022 with more information about his life as a royal.
A critic says people are ‘fed up’ with the Sussexes complaining
Not everyone was pleased with Meghan and Harry’s desire to openly share their grievances. Some people find it hard to sympathize with the Sussexes when they are wealthy and privileged.
“Well, listen, plenty of people are fed up with hearing from Meghan and Harry that they are life’s eternal victims,” royal expert Jonathan Sacerdoti said on E!’s Daily Pop. “They live in a $14-million mansion in Montecito, albeit with the rescue chicken coop, but they haven’t got much to complain about compared to most people.”
He added, “I’m not meaning to be unsympathetic, Prince Harry did have a difficult upbringing, and it may make for interesting reading in that biography that he said he’s going to write, but people are sick of hearing complaints from them.”
How has the royal family reacted?
The royal family often follows the rule of “never complain, never explain”, and they have mostly stayed quiet in public when it comes to accusations from Meghan and Harry.
However, they did address Meghan’s accusations of racism in her interview with Oprah. For example, Buckingham Palace assured the public it would look into these claims, saying, “While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”
Meanwhile, as reported by BBC, Prince William defended his family when asked about Meghan’s claims. He said during a public event that the royals are “very much not racist.”
